This is a photo of Merrimack Jail in 1916, at the current location of Concord High School (cue snarky teenager saying it looks like the use hasn’t changed much in almost 100 years). We’re guessing the term maximum security wasn’t invented until prisons started looking less like idyllic farmhouses and more like not-so-idyllic farmhouses. What, your farmhouse doesn’t have barbed-wire rings on top of the fence and steel bars in the windows? Some farm, we say.

Concord’s own Jim Kinhan recently trudged the nearly-100 mile stretch of Hadrian’s Wall Path that runs from Newcastle to Bowness in the northern countryside of England, and as you can see in this photo, the Insider did, too. Not pictured: Kinhan bouncing on the balls of his feet at the end yelling, “Yo Hadrian!”

You may remember that we featured this 3-D eyeball in Thomas Devaney’s downtown art studio this winter, with a similar shot, but we weren’t able to shoot it while the city was under attack from laser fire, or through our sweet Kool-Aid photo filter, so we figured this would be a solid update with those features. In all honesty, though, this shot from Instagram user @darkell_ did a much better job of capturing the eyeball up close than our attempts, so it deserves to be celebrated. Before we’re all vaporized, especially.

Merrimack Valley student Danielle Decicco holds a certificate presented to Sherryl Correllus and Durwood Sargent of Friends of Forgotten Children, where Decicco is a volunteer through MVHS. And no, she doesn’t have three hands, though that is a pretty sweet optical illusion. Representatives of local businesses and area agencies that host work sites for students in transition attended an appreciation event at MV on May 20. Students transitioning into adulthood gain work experience, invaluable self-confidence and life skills at these sites. The following Concord-area locations provided work sites this year: Friends of Forgotten Children, Hannaford Supermarkets, Havenwood-Heritage Heights, Merrimack County Nursing Home, Murray’s Farms Greenhouses, MVHS Food Service, NH Audubon McLane Center, Osborne’s Agway, Painted Blessings Ranch, Pleasant View Center, Robert’s Greenhouses, Merrimack Valley-Concord SPCA, United Church of Penacook, Women Infants and Children Program. Apparently baseball players used to be assigned uniforms based on what the coach guessed their future profession would be (what, no journalists?) These future doctors, dentists, lawyers and medics made up the Concord entry in the first New England Babe Ruth Regional Series at Rollins Park. So how’d they do? Well, their coach was named Win Avery (that means we have no idea and just thought that was a super fitting name for a coach). Thanks to Jim Boyle for the photo.

‘Tis the season for spring cleaning (wait, can we say ‘tis the season if it’s not winter? We hope so, otherwise we’re facing two sanctions already). Thankfully for the Concord Family YMCA, employees of Fidelity Investments stopped by May 7 to jazz up the Child Development Center as part of Fidelity Cares Volunteer Day. The playground and front entrance received a thorough wash, and even the bus got a good scrub in. So when does Fidelity want to send a crew over to the Insider office?

On May 5, The Concord Trust for the Enhancement of Public Education awarded over $18,000 to Concord Public School educators at its 16th Annual Grant Awards Ceremony, held at the Mill Brook School. Grant winners from 2013 displayed the fruits of their projects, like Abbot-Downing teachers Sissy Ellis, left, and Luanne Snow. The 10 funded projects include such things as a solar telescope for CHS astronomy students; drum/movement kits for Beaver Meadow students; a 3-D printer for Rundlett’s media center and seventh grade science students; Lego Story Kits for a third grade class at the Christa McAuliffe school; a MacBook Air for Broken Ground students in Summer Literacy Camp to write, produce, film and edit a movie and news segments; a coping program for Rundlett students at risk for high stress; an LED HDTV for presentations in engineering, drafting and architectural drawing classes; Swivl video technology so CHS students who aim to be teachers can do self assessments; lap tops with specialized software so CHS journalism students can collaboratively edit audio/video raw material into quality podcasts and video reports; and hydroponic and alternative energy equipment for Project SEE to build grow rooms to initiate sustainable local food production.

Last week we went artifact hunting with the Division of Historic Resources at the archaeological field school set up where the Margaret Pillsbury General Hospital once stood. Well, here it is once-standing. And also with 11 identically-clad nurses posing awkwardly on the front lawn. It appears Henry, the beloved dog on staff at McGowan Fine Art, has let his new celebrity (he WAS featured as a business dog of Concord in the <em>Insider</em>, after all) go to his adorable, furry little head. He apparently locked Sarah and Amanda up in the closet and tried to run the gallery himself this week. How do we know? We bought a Picasso original for two broken dog treats and a belly rub. Score!

Lending credence to the notion that each week’s copy of the Insider is truly on fire, it turns out paper is flammable. At least we’re presuming that’s what caused this fire at the Rumford Press on North Main Street on June 23, 1921. Of course, it could have been an electric fire started when all the employees’ laptop batteries got too hot, but we’d only be speculating on that one.

NHTI held its annual Wiffle Ball tournament Saturday afternoon, and although soggy fields forced the entire event indoors, people still had a smashing good time. Above, David Underhill takes a swing at an offering from teammate Joe DuBreuil. Money raised this year will go to help the family of a 6-year-old girl named Katie, who has survived cancer and two brain surgeries but still suffers from a rare liver condition called Alagille Syndrome.

Know what’s new to the menu at Dos Amigos? Romance. Those perusing the staff favorites menu board lately have been treated to proof, thanks to this promposal (is that a word? It should be.) The message lists Becca’s favorite option as a “chicken burrito with awesome sauce and extra chips and will you go to prom with me?” Obviously, she said yes.
