Here we have Rachel Geoghegan Umberger with her parents, Emily Geoghegan and Leanne Tigert, on a trip to Castleton Geoghegan to visit the “ancestral sod” in Ireland this summer. We have no idea what that sign says, but we’re just going to assume it’s something like “Please place Insider here.” Or maybe it says, “Watch out for those power lines, that looks like a whopper of a storm about to blow through.” That’s sound advice, we think. So do we, mostly because they never existed – there’s no such thing as a flame retardant pea coat. This picture from reader Earl Burroughs depicts William Green, fire chief for 38 years en route to earning the nickname “grand old man of the department,” and Mayor Charles French with the first piece of mechanized equipment the Concord fire department ever received.

Apparently Concord has a long and storied history of having major city buildings with sweet golden domey-type things on top. This is the old Court House and City Hall in 1857, and features both the ubiquitous dome and a rather regal looking facade.

The Insider received its first ever wedding invitation when Ashley and Jonas Bendiks got hitched this May, and of course we happily accepted. We then proceeded to hit the open bar pretty hard, use our finger to steal some of the frosting off the cake and nap in the coat closet until morning. So we may not remember it, but this picture proves we were there! And is that our good buddy Luke Bonner, recently wed himself, in the back row? (Being 7 feet tall probably makes you a regular in the back row of pictures.) Thanks for the invite, Ashley and Jonas, and many happy years to both of you!

This is a photo of a postcard of City Hall, sent to us by reader Earl Burroughs. It does beg the question of why anyone would want a postcard of city hall, but perhaps all the wastewater treatment plant postcards were sold out. Either way, it’s super authentic because of the wavy postage stamp still visible in ghost form in the background.

Instagram user @archporn described this photo as a “Romanesque spire with altostratus undulatus clouds.” We prefer the more traditional meteorological phrase “a Romanesque spire with super cute fluffy white clouds that kind of remind us of Col. Sanders’s mustache.” We’ve heard it both ways.

It’s hard to imagine Concord High School without corridors connecting buildings and sprawling square footage and Insider staff members getting routinely lost on the inside, but that was the case when the high school was Parker School, built in the late 1800s (mostly because there were no Insider staff members then.) Best we can tell, you’re looking at the entire Parker “campus” here. Thanks to reader Earl Burroughs for sending the photo along.

This was the first annual parade featuring the same guy 100 times, which sadly was canceled after just one year because the guy was really tired. What this actually is, though, is the Shriners parade on North Main Street in 1926. But where are the awesome tiny little cars??

What has three hammers, two drills and only one visible foot? An industrious monopod? Actually, no, it’s these people! This is Linda Bliss, Steve Christensen and Jennifer Stacy, all from Rotary Club of Concord, along with Art Michaud and Pete Crateau from Granite State Glass. The Rotary Club continues to invest time, talent and treasure in Child and Family Services’ transitional living home on Perley Street. Over the years, the Rotary has dedicated itself to the CFS Transitional Living Program, which provides housing, life skills training and supportive services to formerly homeless youth as they work toward becoming self-sufficient, independent adults. During these final weeks of summer, a team from Rotary spends Wednesdays refurbishing the house, making major repairs and improvements. The project is being coordinated by Mike Stacy of the Rotary Club, with donations of material and labor from Granite State Glass, and supplies from Big Jim’s, with the help of Don Steenbeke, Jr. For more information on the CFS Transitional Living Program, visit, cfsnh.org.

Celeste Oliva, a shop specializing in a huge variety of olive oils and balsamic vinegars at 75 S. Main St., celebrated its grand opening Thursday with the mayor, several customers and Chamber of Commerce representatives. Starr Manus, Tim Sink, Donna Rice, owners Charla and Clark Mayotte, Mayor Jim Bouley, Paul Ebbs and Heather Capraro were on hand to snip the ribbon. Someone suggested framing a piece of the ribbon, but we think we’d rather just dip it in one of those amazing olive oils. Stop down to sample the tastes (wild mushroom and sage infused olive oil? Um, yes please!) and grab a bottle or two.

Winners of the 2014 Funds for Education Golf Tournament presented by the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce: Mark Coen, Matt Levins, Jackson Bouley and Jim Bouley. We’ve been told one of them is the mayor of Concord. We’ll let you guess, but we’re going with the one second from the right, because we’re pretty sure we’ve heard the name Mayor Bouley around town a few times. The tournament was held Aug. 6 at Beaver Meadow Golf Course, with 29 teams and 116 players participating. The foursome above won first place, with second place going to Joe Kasper, Derek Pabst, Andy Tabor and Dave Pabst and third place going to Brian Hoffman, John Holm, Bob Bowers and Sean Bradley. Other winners included Bridget Overson (putting contest, ladies), Ron Snow (putting contest, men), Kristine Girard (longest drive, ladies), Rich Lambert (longest drive, men), Joe Kasper (straightest drive) and Carlton Braley (closest to the trap.)

Reader Earl Burroughs sent us this photo from his superb collection depicting the first plane to fly over Concord, which was piloted by Capt. Robert Fogg in the early 1920s. That makes this the first photo of the first flight over Concord, also making this the first Classic Concord photo of the first photo of the first flight over Concord. And the last thing you read before closing the Insider and spending the next half hour regaining your bearings.
