It's all a bit foggy – Tue, 26 Aug 2014

This may be the Insider’s first ever travel selfie, courtesy of Meghan Beckett and her boyfriend, Kris Skinner, both of Concord. They recently visited San Francisco – that’s the Golden Gate Bridge back there! (Not pictured: golden gates. Pictured: signature fog.)

Salem, Mass., may be home to the house of seven gables, but Concord has the house of however many gables (and barren trees) there are in this picture. Actually, it doesn’t have that anymore, either, because this property – once the Benjamin Kimball residence – has largely been displaced by the Capitol Center for the Arts. Thanks to reader Earl Burroughs for sending us the photo.

Instagram user @unbelievabilly claims he was just riding by Horseshoe Pond when he captured this shot of a magical sunset, but we think that’s just what the aliens who came down on that impossibly straight beam of light programmed him to say after they took him up in their spaceship for awhile. We know you take awesome Instagram photos, too, and we want to see ‘em – just tag us with #concordinsider when you post.

We’re going back to school and old school at the same time with this photo. Hopefully that doesn’t mean we have twice as much homework! Reader Earl Burroughs tells us this is Cogswell Kindergarten, which has since been replaced at the same location by the fire station at the corner of Broadway and West Street. We don’t know exactly how old the photo is, but it’s definitely older than the coffee stain in the corner.

Reader Larry Levinson isn’t actually almost 150 years old – he snapped this photo just last month during a Main Street event recreating an 1890 bicycle photo on Main Street. You wouldn’t know it from the background (although you might know it from the boy’s helmet). This young lad was climbing atop a penny farthing, with some help from “two enthusiastic veterans,” according to Levinson. To complete the era-bending mood of the day, the...

Somehow, Instagram user @ boudreaujr got invited to the final rehearsal by the Greater Concord Robin Chorus before the group’s summer show finale, coming to a bird’s nest near you. We like to imagine they were belting out “Wrecking Ball” when this picture was taken. Got cool Instagram photos yourself? Of course you do. Just tag us with #concordinsider when you post them, and we’ll find ‘em.

What better time than the borders issue to break out a classic Concord photo from Contoocook Park in Penacook? This photo of a family hanging out near the pavilion was apparently taken circa before chairs were invented. Bonus points to the guy with the sweet beard and hat for sitting just like he would have in a chair anyway. And more bonus points to reader Earl Burroughs for sending us the photo.

Here’s photographic evidence that we occasionally let the ad staff out of their basement office for things like food and water. Like, cruises full of food and water. That’s Insider ad wizard Sherri Cote on the far right, with Jerry Cote, Madison Cote, Dot Desrosiers, Kaelyn Snair and Kassidy Snair, in Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas during a recent cruise. We hate to break it to you guys, but it looks like the boat may be leaving without...

This snazzy Instagram photo from Instagram user @mcashion led to a series of existential questions in the Insider office. When a one way sign is bent, is it still technically a one way sign? Is Ain Street a real place? Is that smoke coming out of the top of the signs? Is that why we smell fire? It couldn’t be because we fell asleep with the oven on again, could it?

Apparently in the early 1900s, one could go yachting on Long Pond. Well, we guess technically two could go yachting. And they could turn to look at the camera at the exact same time. And they could talk to each other about how perfect this picture would be for the Insider’s water sports issue about 100 years later. And they – or I guess we – could thank reader Earl Burroughs for sending this gem along.

With assistance from two enthusiastic veterens of the bicycling sport, a young boy sits atop a penny farthing, to experience first hand the thrill of riding high in the saddle.  The Main Street event was a recreation of a 1890 photograph in Concord, as a part of the city's 250 year celebration next year.Photo courtesy of Larry Levinson.

What’s cooler than the Taj Mahal? This newspaper, that’s what. At least according to Val Zanchuk and Norma Milne, who toured the Golden Triangle in India in March. That’s them in front of the Taj Mahal, but, as Val tells it, “the real attraction was the Insider. Everyone wanted to know, ‘where does that come from?’ From fantastic Concord, New Hampshire, was our answer!” Preach, Val.

According to Instagram user @boudreaujr, this is the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail at the Karner Blue Easement in Concord. It’s a good thing he supplied all those details, because we would have said it was a, um, butterfly. On a flower-type thing. What? We’re not butterflyologists over here.

This picture is almost exactly like the famed “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” photo depicting workers perched perilously on a steel girder while taking a lunch break over New York City. Except these guys are on the ground, sitting on what appears to be some sort of trolley contraption. And, oh yeah, they’re not even eating lunch. OK, so it’s not really like that at all. Most current Concordians probably associate the Boutwell name with bowling, but this is Ernie Boutwell’s sunset league baseball team from 1936, posing in the most basebally setting possible – in front of an old house. The team was sponsored by Boutwell’s Filling Station, which probably served gas. But imagine if it was the station from which all Hostess Cupcakes were filled? Those are some happy thoughts. Thanks to reader Earl...

This photo was taken during the great ivy attack of the mid-1900s, during which several Concord buildings were completely swallowed up by green leafy madness with a taste for brick. Urban legend has it that what we just said is completely fabricated. This is (spoiler alert) the Unitarian Church, but not the one we know today. This church was located on Capitol Street until fire, not man- or building-eating shrubbery, destroyed it....
