Salem, Mass., may be home to the house of seven gables, but Concord has the house of however many gables (and barren trees) there are in this picture. Actually, it doesn’t have that anymore, either, because this property – once the Benjamin Kimball residence – has largely been displaced by the Capitol Center for the Arts. We’re going back to school and old school at the same time with this photo. Hopefully that doesn’t mean we have twice as much homework! Reader Earl Burroughs tells us this is Cogswell Kindergarten, which has since been replaced at the same location by the fire station at the corner of Broadway and West Street. We don’t know exactly how old the photo is, but it’s definitely older than the coffee stain in the corner.

Reader Larry Levinson isn’t actually almost 150 years old – he snapped this photo just last month during a Main Street event recreating an 1890 bicycle photo on Main Street. You wouldn’t know it from the background (although you might know it from the boy’s helmet). This young lad was climbing atop a penny farthing, with some help from “two enthusiastic veterans,” according to Levinson. To complete the era-bending mood of the day, the boy later cruised through the McDonald’s drive thru on the rig (that didn’t actually happen).

This photo of a family hanging out near the pavilion was apparently taken circa before chairs were invented. What’s cooler than the Taj Mahal? This newspaper, that’s what. At least according to Val Zanchuk and Norma Milne, who toured the Golden Triangle in India in March. That’s them in front of the Taj Mahal, but, as Val tells it, “the real attraction was the Insider. Everyone wanted to know, ‘where does that come from?’ From fantastic Concord, New Hampshire, was our answer!” Preach, Val.

This picture is almost exactly like the famed “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” photo depicting workers perched perilously on a steel girder while taking a lunch break over New York City. Except these guys are on the ground, sitting on what appears to be some sort of trolley contraption. And, oh yeah, they’re not even eating lunch. OK, so it’s not really like that at all. But it is a sweet picture from reader Earl Burroughs of workers taking a break at the South End Barns.

Most current Concordians probably associate the Boutwell name with bowling, but this is Ernie Boutwell’s sunset league baseball team from 1936, posing in the most basebally setting possible – in front of an old house. The team was sponsored by Boutwell’s Filling Station, which probably served gas. But imagine if it was the station from which all Hostess Cupcakes were filled? Those are some happy thoughts. The Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce led a trip to China in April and brought the Insider along. If you look closely, you’ll actually see a pair of issues – that’s two for the price of one! And at free, times two, that’s some tremendous savings. The group of 39 travelers visited Shanghai, Beijing and many attractions including the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven and Ming Tombs. This photo was taken during the great ivy attack of the mid-1900s, during which several Concord buildings were completely swallowed up by green leafy madness with a taste for brick. Urban legend has it that what we just said is completely fabricated. This is (spoiler alert) the Unitarian Church, but not the one we know today. This church was located on Capitol Street until fire, not man- or building-eating shrubbery, destroyed it. Thanks to reader Earl Burroughs for sending the photo along.
