More love for ma

The kindergarteners at Beaver Meadow School love their moms – and we mean really, REALLY love their moms. So much, in fact, that the little muffins are hosting a “Women We Love” tea party for their moms at the school on Mothers Day to share notes they wrote about how great they are. Here’s a sneak peek of what they’ll share (we dare you not to smile while reading this): From Anders: “My mom can rock my new baby brother Benjamin...

Insider readers pay tribute to their favorite ladies

Inge Jones Bow Mom came to this country from Berlin, Germany, right after the occupation as a young bride, married to an MP who did duty at Checkpoint Charlie. She immediately set to work as a military wife, following Dad as he bounced around the country. Life was hard for her (her relatives were all still in Germany,...

Slow on North State City Manager Tom Aspell, without your weekly memo where would we get all our traffic news? This week Tom writes: “With the completion of the new storm sewer trunk line the contractor will focus on installation of new catch basins and replacement of deficient sanitary sewer services in the section of North State Street between Knight and Lake Streets.” Storm sewer trunk line? Look kids, it’s Concord-opoly!

It’s hard for us to imagine what Loudon Road might have looked like in the ’70s, but the fact that there was an eatery called Dan’s Mile-Long Hot Dog Stand speaks volumes. That was just one of the weird thing we learned from All About Town, a board game all about Concord businesses created back in 1976 by Canterbury entrepreneur Albert Aldo. The game is structured like a confusing version of Monopoly: Using faux money printed from the...

Farewell to Vinnie, our avian friend

This week, we pay our respects to Vinnie, a 4-year-old African Grey parrot and Concord celebrity who recently passed away. Vinnie, whose full was was Vinchenzo Capuchelli, was no stranger to The Insider, gracing its pages a handful of times – most recently on the cover of our April 6 pet-stravaganza issue. He died last week after a long illness, his owner Jill Drago told us. On warm spring and summer days, Vinnie and Jill could be...

We were bombarded last week with notes from adoring children and grandchildren who wanted to brag about how great their moms are. We got so many submissions, in fact, that a few stragglers didn't make it in. Our apologies to those moms. We did select a few highlights to put online, so...
