Mom came to this country from Berlin, Germany, right after the occupation as a young bride, married to an MP who did duty at Checkpoint Charlie. She spoke very little English and was seven months pregnant when the Army gave her permission to enter the country. She immediately set to work as a military wife, following Dad as he bounced around the country. Life was hard for her (her relatives were all still in Germany, her father died on his way to a Russian stalag and dad ended up in the hospital), but somehow she made it through everything thrown at her.

Today she is one of the most giving and caring people I know. Yes, she is particular and drives everyone crazy with her “putz-frau” habits, and she constantly challenges her husband, her children and grandchildren to do better and more.

But her heart is in the right place when it comes to helping others. All that she had been through taught her what it means to have someone lend a helping hand, even if that hand doesn’t have much in it. And I love her for that.

I have the best mom ever. She is a positive, patient and understanding mother. She always knows how to make her whole family laugh. She takes extra special care of each one of her girls and especially her grandson, Isaac. She still cooks me dinner, and this is why she is so awesome. I love my mom!

Our mother has always been there for the five of us kids. Who else had to endure swimming lessons, Sunday school, piano and trumpet lessons, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, dance lessons and tie shoes for the first day in seventh grade? How we survived I will never know. I’m sure Mom had a lot to do with it. At 80 years old, she planned her own birthday party because she knew her children were all too busy to fret over that affair.

Love you Mom,

My grandmother is a wonderful person. She supports me in everything I do and has always been there for me. I have learned a lot from her as she is one of the most intelligent people I know. She has taught me to think things through and tells me that if something doesn’t happen it wasn’t meant to be – something better will come along.

I love you, Ma!

I really appreciate everything that my mom does for me, her grandkids and our home. She has supported me through trial and error, through good relationships and bad. When I was growing up, she was the quintessential single mom, doing as much as she could and impressing us with her innovative trips, recipes and life lessons. I will never look at a waterfall without thinking about her . . . She means the world to me and I am happy and grateful to say she’s my mom.

Mom is always thinking of us and the grandkids. She loves spending time as a family and always makes sure everyone gets together regularly. Mom is supportive and loving to all of us. We like it when mom makes dinner too so we don't have to!!

My mother’s gentle spirit is ever present. She raised eight children – seven boys and one girl – and two grandchildren until their early teens. She is now caring for my father, who is sliding into dementia. She never complains unless she is physically tired or sick herself.

I remember her as always being in the kitchen when we were growing up. Her door is always open if another mouth to feed shows up at the house.

Mom can be a clown when she wants to be, and she has passed that on to many of her children.

She taught her Christian ways to her children and in turn to her many, many grandchildren.

My mom is my best friend. She is 89 years young and is so full of adventure that she is willing to try anything. We swim together every week, shop and take trips near and far – including visits to Sweden to visit our children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren. I am so very blessed to have such a special relationship with this truly awesome and inspiring woman.

My mom is so awesome because she still treats me like her little girl even though I’m 28 years old. A perfect example was this Easter when she spoiled her granddaughter, Vivian, (my niece) with tons of presents and candy.

Then she pulled a small teddy bear with bunny ears out of a bag and told me that it was for me – her little girl. I love you, Mom, and I’ll always be your little girl!

My mom has always been my biggest cheerleader. I hear her voice when I tell my girls they can do anything they set their mind to. When I am watching my girls’ soccer games, I see her face at every dance recital, softball game and cheerleading competition I’d ever had.
My mom has always been my biggest advocate; I am channeling her when I teach my little ones how to stand up for themselves, I flash back to her fighting my battles when I had lost faith in myself and the feeling that it gave me knowing she would always be there for me.
My mom has been my biggest teacher. When I am explaining into infinity why pink, orange and green don’t match, I hear her voice saying “practice makes perfect.” I am proud of my mom, grateful for everything she has taught me, and pleased with the woman she has shaped me to be. Thanks, Mom.
