NHTI’s Friday Night at the Movies presents “Night Train to Munich” (1940) Not Rated; 90 minutes
An intrepid British spy boards the night train to Munich in a desperate attempt to rescue a scientist and his daughter from the Nazis. A wartime thriller with just the right amount of puckish humor, a very fine cast including Rex Harrison, Margaret Lockwood, and Paul Henreid (before appearing as Victor Laszlo in “Casablanca”), and excellent production values. The film, masterfully directed by Carol Reed (who also made such iconic films as “The Third Man,” “Our Man in Havana,” and “Odd Man Out”) marks the return of characters Charters and Caldicott (played by Basil Radford and Nauton Wayne, respectively). Stylish, witty, fast, dramatic, and politically charged — an excellent wartime spy thriller.
