Final Crossroads Film series of year

The Final Year is a unique insiders’ account of President Barack Obama’s foreign policy team during their last year in office. Featuring unprecedented access inside the White House and State Department, The Final Year offers an uncompromising view of the inner workings of the Obama administration as they prepare to leave power after eight years.

The film will be shown May 30 at 7 p.m. at Red River Theatres as the final installment of the Crossroads Film & Discussion Series put on by The World Affairs Council of New Hampshire. Tickets are $10 and available at redrivertheatres.org/2018/02/the-final-year.

Illustrator set for storytime Saturday

Join Gibson’s Bookstore on Saturday at 11 a.m. for a storytime special guest illustrator Ryan O’Rourke and his book, Alphabet Boats.

Set sail and learn the ABCs with a boat for each letter. Discover 26 types of vessels, from the more common – canoe and motorboat – to the unusual (umiak and Q-boat). Just like in Alphabet Trucks and Alphabet Trains, colorful art includes the letters of the alphabet hidden (and not-so-hidden) in supporting roles in the illustrations. The text features familiar as well as unusual boats from around the world, packing in tons of instant kid appeal.

Two hikes with AARP this June

Oh, what a resource we have in Concord: 31 trails covering 81 miles. And what better way to get some exercise, enjoy the outdoors and meet new people than a guided hike on an early June morning.

There will be one beginner hike and one moderate hike led by Concord Trails Committee volunteers on June 9 at 10 a.m. for AARP members and their guests.

The beginner hike will be on the Sewalls Falls Trails, led by Fran Philippe. It’s about a 3-mile hike that will take 1½ hours. The moderate hike will be at Carter Hill Orchard and the West End Farm Trail, led by Tim Pifer. This will also be about 3 miles and 1½ hours of hiking time.

Space is limited to 20 people per hike and registration is required. For the Sewalls Falls trail hike, visit aarp.cvent.com/SewallsFalls. For Carter Hill, go to aarp.cvent.com/CarterHillOrchard.

AARP New Hampshire is also hosting free miniature golf for AARP members on Friday from noon to 3 p.m. at Chuckster’s, 9 Bailey Road in Chichester, and May 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Chuckster’s Cave Course, 53 Hackett Hill Road in Hooksett.

Rain or shine, AARP members – and one guest per member – can join the miniature golfing fun for one free round. No reservations are required, but AARP members must show their membership card.

If you have an environmental justice, community activism, adventure, conservation, water, energy and climate change, wildlife, land preservation, agriculture, or indigenous cultures film, consider submitting it to filmfreeway.com/WildScenicFilmFestival

The New Hampshire Rivers Council is also beginning its 10th year of River Runners citizen science invasive species identification workshops. As we prepare for the season, we are seeking groups to host these free workshops.

Grants available for area teachers

Sean Skabo, chairman of The Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce Business and Education Task Force, invites Concord-area teachers to apply for grants through the Chamber’s Business Grants for Teachers program.

Each year, the Chamber awards grants to educators who have developed innovative teaching programs for use in Greater Concord schools. Recipients demonstrate to the committee that their projects fit a specific educational need, are unique to their respective schools and are not supported by the school system’s annual budget. The Chamber raises funding for the Business Grants program through its annual Funds for Education Golf Tournament to be held Aug. 1 at Beaver Meadow Golf Course.

The deadline to submit a grant application is June 1. For more information about the Business Grants program or to download an application, visit ConcordNH Chamber.com/golftournament or contact the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce at 224-2508.
