It’s prom season, and before all you ladies out there groan about being too old to dance the night away, you might want to turn your attention to what you’re going to wear on Friday night.

Because the Concord Mom Prom is this week at the Grappone Conference Center at 7 p.m., and if you haven’t already, you’re going to want to start making some plans for a big night out on the town.

The idea for a mom prom started in Michigan in 2006 as a way to benefit a local charity, and has grown into a nationwide “ladies night out” event. This will be the sixth year of the Concord Mom Prom, after organizer Michelle Myler wanted a fun, affordable way for women to give back to their community – and of course have a little fun in the process.

The beneficiary of this year’s mom prom is Hearts for Kindness, a local organization that promotes acts of kindness through limited monetary assistance to help families with emergency expenses. Their mission is to promote community and hope through acts of kindness that bring people together within the community.

Even though this year’s theme is Black & White Kindness at Night, anything goes for the night’s fashion. You can wear an old prom dress, bridesmaid dress, wedding gown or that great thrift shop find you’ve been looking to wear.

In the past four years (the first one they broke even), Concord Mom Prom has raised more than $33,000 for local charities. Event planners are still seeking support from local businesses to donate raffle items, and sponsorships for this year’s mom prom.

Despite the name, the mom prom isn’t just for moms – all you have to be is 18 or older and in the mood to have a great night. So if you have kids, get a baby sitter (or make your husband watch them), get all dolled up and put on those dancing shoes.

Tickets are $46 and available at What’s in Your Closet Resale Boutique, 9 Pleasant St. or online at concordmomprom.com. The Concord Mom Prom has been known to sell out, so make sure to get those tickets ASAP.
