Based on the popular Diner en Blanc, launched in Paris more than 25 years ago, this whimsical event returns for its fifth year. Dressed all in white, diners arrive with their own well-stocked picnic basket and enjoy an enchanted evening of dining, dancing and entertainment.

The surprise location of this flash mob feast with a French twist will be announced two hours before the event on Concord Hospital’s Facebook page, ConcordHospital.org, CH-Trust.org and via email communications.

Burlesque show at Hatbox Theatre

The Hatbox Theater presents Absinthe and Opium Burlesque and Cabaret, live on Saturday at 7:30 pm.

Absinthe and Opium is proud to be returning to central New Hampshire’s newest performance space, after sold out shows earlier in the season.

Absinthe and Opium Burlesque and Cabaret, Concord’s only burlesque troupe, are introducing the vintage “art of the tease” to audiences around central New Hampshire. The troupe is heavily influenced by vaudeville, musical theater, Bob Fosse, ballroom dancing, jazz and other dances.

The troupe was founded in January 2015 by creative director and choreographer Jennifer Gordon and her partner Roman Sirotin. They are trained ballroom dance instructors and professional ballroom dance competitors, and have performed throughout the country.

After moving to the area, their passion for variety shows, vaudeville and cabaret performance led them to create the troupe.

The troupe now boasts 10 members, all with stage names and personas to protect the innocent, and not-so-innocent in this world of burlesque. Their shows feature guest performers from throughout New England, including comedians, singers and more.

To find out more, visit Romanandjennifer.com or like Absinthe and Opium Burlesque on Facebook at absintheandopiumburlesque.

This is a one-night-only engagement, and tickets are $16.50, $13.50 for members, seniors and students. Tickets are available by calling the Hatbox box office at 715-2315 or visiting hatboxnh.com.

City celebrated Public Works Week

The city of Concord successfully celebrated National Public Works Week, May 21-27, with several events to celebrate with the community and recognize public works employees.

On May 23, a public works celebration was held at Memorial Field featuring a wide variety of public works vehicles for Touch-A-Truck, display tables, career opportunities, live demonstrations, hands-on activities, a pay-as-you-throw trash bag raffle and Battle of the Backhoe. Battle of the Backhoe was a skills competition with several rounds of equipment operators from Concord General Services competing side by side. The ultimate champion of Battle of the Backhoe was Equipment Operator II, Matt Bumford.

Approximately 300 local children attended the event as a field trip with their schools to learn about Concord’s public works services.

On May 24, a barbecue-style luncheon was hosted by Concord General Services’ superintendents for department employees during their lunch break.

Superintendents donated money and bought food to cook as a way of thanking employees for their hard work. These events were able to engage the community, educate local school children and give appreciation to dedicated employees.

Visit concordnh.gov/generalservices for more information about Concord General Services and the services provided to the Concord community.
