Book of the Week: ‘Echo’

Echo

Pam Munoz Ryan

2015, 588 pages

Children’s Fiction, ages 9-12 +

Whether you are looking for a book to listen to, read aloud to someone or just read, Echo is an amazing tale full of music, heartbreak, tragedy and redemption, with a satisfying ending.

The story begins in a forest where Otto meets three mysterious sisters and finds himself, with a harmonica, entwined in a fairytale prophecy and a promise. Decades later, three children – Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania and Ivy in California – find themselves caught up in the same thread of destiny in the darkest days of the 20th century, struggling to keep their families intact and tied together by the music of the same harmonica.

The history was vividly portrayed in the three stories, happening miles apart yet woven together by the beautiful tapestry of music and pulled by the invisible thread of destiny. The suspenseful solo stories converge in an orchestral conclusion.
