Sign up to take part in N.H. Gleans

Want to bring new purpose to your life this year? Consider volunteering with N.H. Gleans and Friends Retired and Senior Volunteer Program to help feed the hungry.

Gleaning is an ancient practice of harvesting extra crops to distribute to those in need throughout the community. Here in New Hampshire, this practice is carried out through N.H. Gleans, a statewide network of organizations that harvests excess produce from farms and gardens to bring to local food pantries, senior centers and schools. N.H. Gleans relies on the help of volunteers to provide the community with nutritious, local foods. In 2016, over 13,000 pounds of fresh food was distributed to the needy.

The Friends RSVP helps solve unmet community needs through volunteers and increases the health and independence of older adults through active, meaningful volunteerism. RSVP capitalizes on people’s interests and skills to provide a wide range of services to needy and vulnerable citizens. In 2016, Friends RSVP coordinated volunteer placements of 499 seniors who contributed over 70,000 hours of service throughout the total program area.

Together, Merrimack County Conservation District, the regional lead for gleaning in Merrimack County, and the Friends RSVP are hosting a free “N.H. Gleans Info Session” at the Friends Program (202 N. State St.) on March 23 at 1 p.m. Come and learn how you can help expand the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables to vulnerable families in your community. Refreshments will be served.

For more information, contact MCCD at 223-6020 or The Friends Program RSVP at 228-7608.

Get a free toilet leak dye test kit

Concord General Services is offering free Toilet Leak Dye Test Kits (while supplies last) at their Utility Billing office at 311 N. State St. to encourage Concord water consumers to practice finding and fixing leaks in celebration of EPA WaterSense’s Fix A Leak Week, March 20-26.

A small leak may not seem like a big deal until you notice a difference in your water bill.

“We’ve had customers shocked when they found out the reason their bill increased so much was from a leaky toilet. Often times higher water bills are a good indicator that there is a leak somewhere,” said Terri Segalini, Fiscal Supervisor for Concord General Services’ Utility Billing Division.

A leaky faucet, showerhead, toilet or irrigation system may seem harmless, but 11,000 gallons of water can be wasted each year in an average household through minor water leaks such as these. Nationwide, that can add up to 1 trillion gallons of water wasted annually. Common leaks are easily correctable. Fixing leaks can reduce water consumption and potentially save money on water bills. Consider upgrading outdated fixtures with WaterSense labeled products to save water, energy and potentially even money on your utility bills.

Be sure to get your free Toilet Leak Dye Test Kit at Concord General Services to perform a quick and easy leak test on your toilet and watch their tutorial video for instructions. Also, join Concord General Services on Twitter @ConcordNHGS on Monday from 2 to 3 p.m. for the EPA WaterSense Fix A Leak Week Twitter Party. Use #FixALeak to share your leak detection results and to tweet along while learning about fixing leaks and other water conservation tips.

Visit concordnh.gov/leaks for more info and instructions on how to perform household leak detection and visit concordnh.gov/ watersense to learn more about the EPA WaterSense Program.
