We got the lowdown on winter operations

Snow season is officially here! Concord has received a few snowstorms already and crews have been out plowing.

As a reminder of our winter operations, streets and sidewalks are plowed on a priority basis. Two sets of crews rotate as needed through snowstorms for street plowing.

Our main crew plows streets from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Our swing shift operates when necessary from 3 to 11 p.m. As needed, our main shift resumes operations at 11 p.m. through 3 p.m. the next day. Major arterial streets and access routes are the first priority, followed by school areas, collector streets and then all remaining streets.

With the exception of downtown, crews do not begin plowing sidewalks (including school walking routes) until after the snow has stopped and streets have first been treated. Our Downtown Services Team is dedicated to carefully plowing sidewalks and hardscapes and rotates shifts as needed, similar to how crews plow streets. Sidewalks are also plowed on a priority level basis.

Downtown areas have first priority and are the only sidewalks that are plowed during a snowstorm.

All other sidewalks, including school walking routes, are cleared during normal business hours (Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.) after the snow has stopped and the streets have been plowed.

Sidewalks in school walking zones are a priority, followed by all other sidewalks. School walking route plowing priorities have been established between the schools and the city.

We encourage everyone to visit our webpage for more information on the city’s snow removal practices at concordnh.gov/ winteroperations.

And in case you were curious, after running for the intended six weeks, Concord’s fall leaf collection is officially over for the season.

The program was projected to continue through Dec. 9, weather permitting.

A few early winter snow storms impeded collection efforts; however, crews went right back to leaf collection after plowing and treating city streets and sidewalks. However, snow does complicate and slow down the collection process. The vacuums start collecting leaves and snow, and sometimes the leaves become frozen to the ground or in the snow, making collection almost impossible at times. The most recent storms have accumulated snow along city streets that now prohibit the use of vacuum trucks.

Fortunately, crews were able to pass through most of the city’s residential streets once to collect leaves before the weather changed.

There are still some locations in the rural areas of the city that crews unfortunately did not have time to reach.

Earth Materials Recycling Center is closed for the season. The site will re-open in the spring in time for spring leaf collection.
