Breakfast, basketball and programming

There’s also some hockey thing going on

Wednesday

If you’re an early bird who likes to eat breakfast – and you are or want to be a captain at the Rock ‘N Race – you’ll want to check out the Merrimack County Savings Bank Rock ‘N Race Captains’ Breakfast.

It’s a chance for you to enjoy a delicious breakfast, learn how to organize a team and maybe even take home a special token of appreciation. And it will support Concord Hospital Payson Center for Cancer Care, which is always nice.

Gotta get up early for this one though: It starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Bektash Shrine Center on Pembroke Road.

Just RSVP by calling 225-2711, ext. 3076, or emailing chtrust event@crhc.org.

Basketball fans will want to listen up here. The Harlem Wizards, defined by their high-flying antics and showmanship (and the longest winning streak in the history of “professional sports” at more than 2,000 games), are coming to town, and you have a chance to see them.

This game, presented by Concord Pediatric Dentistry, will serve as a fundraiser for heart health advocate Jeremy Woodward and his brother Jamie to run the 2016 Boston Marathon. They’re on Tedy’s Team, formed by former Patriots great Tedy Bruschi.

The game will be at Bishop Brady High School at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 to $30 and can be purchased in advance at harlemwizards.com.

For more information, call Jeremy Woodward at 721-2830, email jeremy@jeremysbootcamp.com or go to facebook.com/ironheartjeremy.

Thursday

This day marks a somber anniversary: 30 years ago today, the space shuttle Challenger exploded, killing all aboard, including Concord High School teacher Christa McAuliffe.

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center will commemorate the 30th anniversary with a special reception for teachers, school administrators, school board members and their families from 4 to 6 p.m.

Friday

NHTI has a perfect event for the most hard-core of gamers: Global Game Jam.

It’s a weekend-long nonstop game development event by programmers, artists and musicians. The theme will be revealed at 5 p.m. Friday and game demonstrations for the public take place at 5 p.m. Sunday.

And don’t worry, it’s not just for NHTI students.

Reserve your spot for free (except for food and tons of soda) by calling 271-6484, emailing gwalek@ccsnh.edu or going to globalgamejam.org.

Oh yeah, and there’s this other thing going on over the weekend. In case your copy of the Insider didn’t come with a cover (which we hope would never actually happen), or if you just have no idea what’s going on around here whatsoever, there’s this thing called the 1883 Black Ice Pond Hockey Championship going down.

It’s this big outdoor hockey tournament played on the pond at White Park, and apparently it’s kind of a big deal.

Anyway, it runs all weekend, so you should check it out at some point. And there’s plenty more info in this issue – just read on.

Saturday

The Discovery Center has more in store to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Challenger disaster. If you’re not an educator but you still want to learn about what happened that day – and about McAuliffe, specifically – you can check out a screening of the documentary Reach for the Stars.

The public is welcome to all showings of the film – one Saturday and one Sunday, both at 3 p.m.

General admission for the Discovery Center is $10 for adults, $9 for students and seniors, $7 for children 3 to 12; members and children under 3 are free. Tickets to Reach for the Stars and other shows in the planetarium theater are an additional $5.

Sunday

What weekend would be complete without a little live music?

Well, you can scratch that itch at Hermanos Cocina Mexicana, where Dan Weiner will be playing at 6:30 p.m. As usual, no cover!
