City briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell heads down to White Park to feed the ducks. But he accidentally eats the entire loaf of bread on the walk over, so he has to feed them with tiny bits of city memo. Thankfully, the ducks were kind enough to transcribe all of them for us.

We’re your one stop shop

For Main St. updateness

Light construction on Main Street will begin this week, and pavement sawing and test pit digging will continue, Aspell writes. Test pit wrestling is slated for next month.

Test pits will be marked off ahead of time and will occupy a few parking spaces at a time, just like that jerk in the fancy sports car, helping to determine underground utility locations.  These pits will be filled immediately following work – with candy, we’re hoping! – and parking will reopen promptly thereafter. Traffic patterns on Main Street will see slight adjustments but two-way traffic will be maintained.

You’ve been iced, bro

Arena is now frozen

The ice at the Douglas N. Everett Arena is back in place for another season, Aspell writes. It had summered in Alaska, as usual.

Last week, the arena converted from concrete to ice for the skating season, changing behind a dressing screen to remain decent. Creating the ice requires a lot of measuring for exact painting. Visit Concord General Services’ Facebook page for pictures of the painting process, or watch their YouTube video to view it. Public skating occurs now through March 18. The arena also offers adult and youth stick practice, as well as skating lessons. View the arena webpage for more information.

Do you even lift, bro?

That’s two bro headlines

As part of the Sewalls Falls Bridge Replacement Project, and in an effort to protect sensitive environmental resources, brook floater river mussels within the project area require relocation prior to the work commencing. If you want to see the mussels, you’re gonna have to buy two tickets to the gun show.

Qualified biologists are actively assessing state endangered mussel populations and relocating them outside of the project area.  Final design and permitting of the new bridge continues.
