City briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell begins construction on the city memo wing he hopes to add to the New Hampshire History Musuem, only to return after a good night’s sleep to discover that a family of squirrels has disassembled the entire thing. As he weepily surveys the damage, we discover that the scraps of carnage spell out the city memo!

Wait, winter is fun?

At this carnival, it is

The annual Winter Carnival at White Park is scheduled for Jan. 18 from 1 to 4 p.m., Aspell writes.  It’s a fun community event that the whole family will enjoy, especially if your family includes penguins, Eskimos or penguimos.

Make a sign or banner to represent your family and carry while you march in the intergenerational parade as part of the opening ceremonies – just make sure your family representation is family-friendly. Also, try competing in speed skating and sledding contests – presumably not at the same time or as a cause-and-effect demonstration –  and warm up by the bonfire while eating a tasty treat. In the event the carnival must be canceled due to poor weather conditions, it will be rescheduled for Feb. 1, when weather conditions are always awesome.

The defense doesn’t rest

It learns to kick your butt

The Concord Police Department will be providing Rape Aggression Defense courses in the near future, Aspell writes.  The RAD program – which isn’t rodents against drunk driving, as we mistakenly thought – is a free self-defense course for women instructed by specially trained police officers. The course will include lecture, discussion and hands-on self-defense techniques suitable for women of all ages and abilities. It won’t include hands-off self-defense, due to its ineffectiveness. Master police officer Mandy Reed recently completed training as a RAD instructor and will be leading the training.  Stay tuned for the course schedule, which will be coming out soon.
