We caught up with a recent “Girl of the Month” at Girls Inc., a fun after-school program that helps girls achieve their personal best through one-on-one attention, leadership development, enrichment programs, and a caring family environment. Each month, girls and staff choose a “Girl of the Month” who exemplifies their motto, “Strong. Smart. Bold.” This month’s winner is Lily Hillsgrove.

How old are you? Where do you go to school?

I am 9 years old, and I go to the Christa McAuliffe Elementary School.

How long have you been coming to Girls, Inc.?

Two years!

Why do you think you were chosen Girl of the Month?

Because I was strong, smart and bold.

What do you think is your best quality?

I think my best quality is that I am kind.

What are some qualities of a good female role model?

Being kind, thoughtful and respectful.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Play with my dog and hamster.

Have you read any good books lately?

I read Holes about bad boys who get in trouble.

What do you think is the hardest thing about being a kid these days?

The hardest thing is taking care of three animals.

If you were president for a day, what would you do to help the country?

I would help homeless people.

Who is your role model?

Morgan (a counselor at Girls Inc.), because she is kind, respectful and thoughtful.

What is a personal goal you have for the coming year?

I want to get more money so I can give it to the SPCA.

What would you like to do when you grow up?

I want to be a veterinarian when I grow up.

Who in your life deserves a shout-out for something great they did recently?

My sister, because she gave the SPCA food for the animals.

What is the best thing about being a girl?

Because you get to go to Girls Inc.!

Do you have any advice for our new governor?

I think she just has to be strong, smart and bold and keep her head up, and remember, no job is too big.
