The American Friends Service Committee will host an issue-oriented weekly radio show to be broadcast from 5 to 6 p.m. every Monday on WNHN, a low-power FM station broadcasting and web-casting from Concord.
“State House Watch” will be the radio companion to the organization’s weekly email newsletter of the same name. The show will be hosted by Arnie Alpert and Maggie Fogarty, the organization’s two staff members.
“We expect to let listeners know about major developments at the State House during the legislative session,” said Alpert.
Each week’s show will feature guests with expertise on particular matters, such as affordable housing, the state budget, the campaign to abolish the death penalty, immigration, and other topics under discussion at the State House.
Former state senator Burt Cohen, a former radio reporter who hosts his own show on WNHN, will be the first guest.
“Over the next six months we’ll be talking about Issues such as the state budget, proposals to expand access to Medicaid, raising the minimum wage, protecting voting rights, even what the state can do to fight bedbug infestations,” Fogarty said.
The AFSC is a Quaker organization that works world-wide on projects of humanitarian development, conflict resolution, and promotion of social justice. The AFSC’s New Hampshire Program has been increasingly involved in matters of state policy in recent years and started its “State House Watch” newsletter in 2011 because so many issues it cared about were under consideration by lawmakers.
