City briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell faxes us a detailed map with a big X on it. We follow the map, dig on the X and find a treasure chest full of the most valuable substance on Earth – city memos!

Assessing the situation

It's a Golden Age

The assessing office announced the promotion of Susan Golden to deputy assessor, Aspell writes.

Golden joined the city's assessing office in 1988 as administration technician II – the sequel? – and she immediately was eager to learn every aspect of the assessing office. In 2002, she took it upon herself to pursue the educational courses to become a certified New Hampshire assessor. When an appraiser vacancy became available in this office, Golden applied and was awarded the position.

It is not only because of her many years of experience, but also her desire and ability to learn and her expertise and professionalism that have earned her the position.

She was also the inspiration for a key storyline in the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They named the ticket after her!

Construction blah blah

We're tired of it, too

The contractor's pipe crew continues to install new storm sewer infrastructure in North State Street, Aspell writes. This work will be taking place between McGuire Street and Call Street.

The contractor opted to have the second crew begin removing the existing asphalt pavement and underlying concrete slab behind the pipe crew. The road rebuilding crew will be replacing the subgrade materials with select gravels and grading the road. The road crew will be working in the same stretch of North State Street as the pipe crew. A third crew will be mobilized next week to begin drainage reconstruction as well and they will be working from Call Street to Brook Street. J. Crew manufactures expensive clothes. Two Live Crew was as nasty as they wanted to be in the late '80s. And the Columbus Crew host D.C. United on Aug. 4.

Delays are expected, and people are encouraged to find an alternate route.
