Hey, everybody, it's Jillian Zube, the Girls Inc. Girl of the Month. She's a great archer and she's helpful, too!

Avid Insider readers will remember our recent article about Girls Inc., a fun afterschool group for local girls (“Girls Inc. brings out the smart, strong and bold in local little ladies,” Nov. 11). Well, each month, the girls and staff choose a “Girl of the Month” who exemplifies their motto: “Strong. Smart. Bold.”

This month, that girl is Jillian Zube. We caught up with her and asked her some questions so you could get to know her. Check it out!

How old are you? Where do you go to school?

I'm 10 and I'm in fourth grade at Beaver Meadow Elementary School.

How long have you been coming to Girls Inc. and what do you think about it?

About two months. There are a LOT of good snacks here!

Why do you think you were chosen Girl of the Month?

Well, if someone is hurt, I ask if they're okay. If they don't respond, I go and tell the counselors.

What do you think is your best quality?

Being helpful. Plus, I clean up around here.

What are three qualities of a good female role model?

Being strong. Being smart and getting good grades. Speaking up if someone's being bullied.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Sometimes when my dad comes home from work, we shoot bows and arrows together.

Have you read any good books lately?

Running Out of Time, by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It's about a girl named Jessie. The characters in the book think it's 1848 but Jessie's mom has a big secret – it's really 1996!

What do you think is the hardest thing about being a kid these days?

Doing math homework – especially piding decimals!

If you were president for a day, what would you do?

I would let all the kids get out of school and just play. I would also make a law that all dogs have to be buckled up in the car. If kids have to be buckled up, dogs should too!

Who is your role model, and why?

My dad! Because he helps me with my math homework. And my mom and dad take me bike riding a lot, and we've ridden over 1,000 miles together. My dad does archery with me, and one time I saw him shoot an arrow smack in the middle of the pumpkin!

What is a personal goal you have for the coming year?

I want to get better at taping hula hoops that we're working on at Girls Inc.

What would you like to do when you grow up?

I'd probably like to become a hunter.

Who in your life deserves a shout-out for something great they did recently?

My friends, Julia, Samma, Rose and Felicia – we put all the books on the bookshelf in order for our teacher, Mrs. Mounsey.

Great to meet you, Jillian!
