City Briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell invites all his friends over to his house. They wear their favorite jerseys and make delicious snacks. Everyone gathers around the television for the main event – a VHS recording of Tom delivering the city memo!

In the clear

Follow recycling regs

Since the start of weekly recycling and “Pay As You Throw,” our community has reduced our annual solid waste stream by approximately 6,000 tons, saving the community approximately $400,000 in solid waste disposal costs, Aspell writes. The contractor, Bestway, has noted some increase in contamination of recyclable material with solid waste placed in colored bags. The regulations permit the use of only clear plastic bags for shredded paper, as it is important for the contractor's attendant to see the recyclable materials at the curb. It's the first of many checks the material receives during the recycling process before it is ultimately used in a new product. While in the past, as a courtesy, Bestway may have collected colored plastic bags containing recyclables at some homes, the program can no longer continue this practice since the material at some addresses is contaminated, Aspell writes.

Smooth sailing

White Park pond open

Skating at White Park Pond is open again, Aspell writes. The skate house will be open for skate rentals on Friday night from 6-8 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon, 1-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.; and on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Skate rentals are $2 per pair.

February fix

No traffic impact

Work continues on the culvert rehabilitation in the vicinity of the state prison and Palm Street along North State Street, Aspell writes. Crews continue to evaluate the existing stone masonry culvert and prepare the walls and floors for grout sealing and concrete surfacing. This trenchless culvert restoration work is expected to continue through February. No traffic delays are expected.

Savings to shoot for

Golf prices favorable

For the first time since 2009, the Beaver Meadow Golf Course is holding a membership drive, Aspell writes. If you are a returning member or are thinking about joining, the city has a great deal for you. Both current and new members alike will benefit from the savings. Come in with a new member, and you both will be able to save up to $100 off both of your memberships (certain restrictions apply). For complete details, visit beavermeadowgolfcourse.com. The membership drive will end Feb. 29. In other news, the Beaver Meadow Bar and Grille sponsored a blood drive Jan. 26. The Red Cross declared it a great success, collecting 62 pints, the most ever collected at Beaver Meadow. Many thanks to all who participated.
