City Briefly

Each week, people gather on City Manager Tom Aspell's lawn to marvel at the giant snowman. The crowd grows and grows until the entire city of Concord is outside Tom's house, gaping at the snowman. Then, Tom himself bursts out of the snowman and carols a city memo with perfect pitch. This week was no exception.

toss that tree

At three locations

Christmas trees are not picked up by the trash service, Aspell writes. Residents of Concord may drop off their Christmas trees at the following locations: the Transfer Station at 77 Old Turnpike Road, Beaver Meadow Golf Course, or the White Farm on Clinton Street. All deposited trees will be chipped into mulch. Trees will be accepted through Jan. 28. For more information, call the General Services Department at 228-2737.

on thin ice

No skating just yet

Now that the temperature has fallen and ice has begun to form on lakes, streams and ponds, it is time to start thinking about skating at White, Rollins, and Merrill parks, Aspell writes. We caution all skaters that the ice on the ponds at White and Merrill Parks is still too thin to support anyone at the present time. Ponds need a consistent 4-5 inches of ice before skaters will be allowed onto them. Merrill Park pond has been out of the “skating loop” for several years due to the constant flow of water beneath the ice surface, which makes it unsafe for use. Once the “Keep Off” signs are removed by staff at the White Park pond, skating will be allowed. The White Park Pond skating status will be updated daily on the Parks and Recreation Department's website at concordnh.gov/recreation.

no parking

Winter bans in effect

As winter weather approaches, it may be necessary for the city to issue overnight parking bans in order to perform snow removal operations, Aspell writes. Overnight winter parking bans will be advertised on the city website at concordnh.gov and on ConcordTV Channel 17. In addition, the city will provide notice of overnight winter parking bans to local media outlets, but cannot guarantee that the ban will be advertised. Citizens who are interested in receiving parking ban notifications via e-mail or text message through Twitter may sign up at twitter.com/concordtvalerts.

Winter parking bans last from midnight through 7 a.m. Those who park on the street in violation of a winter parking ban are subject to having their vehicles towed and impounded at their expense and will also receive a $100 ticket. For more information, contact the parking pision at 225-8640.

keeping the faith

Soul Surfer at library

Soul Surfer will be the movie shown at the Concord Public Library on Dec. 28 at 1 p.m, Aspell writes

Starring AnnaSophia Robb and Dennis Quaid, Soul Surfer is the inspirational story of Bethany Hamilton. Based on her book by the same title, Soul Surfer highlights the faith, determination and courage that Bethany demonstrated in her quest to get back on the board after a devastating shark attack at the age of 13. Rated PG. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 225-8670.
