City Briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell sneaks out to the Route 3 corridor project, makes sure no one is looking and scratches out a city memo in the drying cement. This week, we acted as lookout and then transcribed it here for you.

Trash talk

Schedule changes

There will be no trash or recycling collection Nov. 24, Aspell writes. The upcoming trash and recycling collection will occur as follows: Thursday's route will be picked up on Friday and Friday's route will be picked up on Saturday. The transfer station will be closed Thursday as well. Please note that Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday routes will be on schedule. Please place trash at the curb by 7 a.m. For questions regarding trash or recycling, contact Bestway Disposal at 224-5454.

Leaves leaving

Saturday drop-offs

During fall clean-up, the Ft. Eddy Road reprocessing center will be open the following Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon to take residents' leaves, weather permitting: Dec. 3 and Dec. 10. Residents may drop leaves off free of charge, but they will have to empty the leaves out of bags themselves, Aspell writes.

In transit

New vans on the way

The city has been awarded a grant from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services for the purchase of two compressed natural gas powered Ford Transit Connect cargo vans, Aspell writes. These environmentally friendly units should save approximately one-third on fuel costs alone. The vans are now on order and should be here in early spring 2012. They will be used by the General Services Department.

The Capital Area Mutual Aid Fire Compact has received a grant for $152,155 from the state. The money will be used to replace all workstations, monitors and servers, as well as to provide software upgrades and training for the Concord Fire Department's dispatch unit.

The end is in sight

Work winding down

The construction season is rapidly winding down and the Route 3 corridor project is coming closer to seasonal winter shutdown, Aspell writes. This week, work will entail paving the sidewalk, raising utility castings, placing loam, and miscellaneous cleanup. These activities will take place on North State Street, between the city's combined operations and maintenance facility and the New Hampshire State Prison. The contractor will be working only Monday through Wednesday due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

See you in spring

Water work wraps up

The water mains on on Community and Steeple View drives and High, Summer, Shaw and Cross streets have been lined and the house services reconnected, Aspell writes. The contractor has shut down for the winter and will resume in the spring.

Kick them to the curb

Leaf pick-up ongoing

Last Monday, three crews started picking up leaves around the city and will continue to do so as weather permits, Aspell writes. Residents are reminded that leaves are to be raked to the curb and left loose so crews can vacuum them up. Do not bag the leaves and do not place brush in the leaves.
