City Briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell laces up his ice skates, buckles his chinstrap, and rockets a wicked slapshot of a city memo right into our five-hole. This week was no exception.

Born to be wild

easy rider

With the weather improving and the 88th Annual Laconia Bike Week approaching (June 11-19), the number of motorcycles on the roads throughout the city is increasing, Aspell writes. The Concord Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit would like to remind motorcycle operators of some of the laws that apply to the equipment and operation of motorcycles:

• No person shall drive a motorcycle on which the grips are higher than the shoulder level of the driver.

• Every motorcycle driven in New Hampshire must have footrests for each passenger and a rearview mirror.

• All motorcycles must have a state inspection completed by June 30 of each year.

• A person driving a motorcycle shall not carry another passenger unless such motorcycle is designed to carry more than one person.

• No person shall drive a motorcycle while carrying anything which prevents him/her from keeping both hands on the handlebars.

• The driver of a motorcycle shall not pass in the same lane occupied by the vehicle being passed and shall not drive on a roadway between lanes of traffic.

• Motorcycles shall not be driven more than two abreast in a single lane.

• If a motorcycle is not equipped with a windshield or screen which protects the driver's eyes/face, the driver must wear eyeglasses, goggles or a protective face shield.

• Protective headgear is required for all riders less than 18 years of age. Headgear must be equipped with a neck or chin strap.

In living color

Sean Brown, a 16-year veteran of the Concord Fire Department, has begun his duties as the City's new fire marshal. Brown has served with the department since 1995 and has been a company officer since 2007, Aspell writes. In his new position, he will oversee all fire prevention work, including inspections, investigations, and community fire and burn injury prevention efforts. He will also oversee the Fire Alarm and Traffic Bureau.

Get with the program

The Parks and Recreation Department has been busy this past week with people registering for summer programs, Aspell writes. Many classes and camps are almost full. Information on all programs can be found online at concordnh.gov/recreation.

That's all from Tom this week, but be sure to check out what he has in store for next week. Will he finally perfect his “knucklepuck” technique? Will he strap on the mask and get in goal? Or will he embrace his true calling and take up figure skating?
