City Briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell whips out his dual-neck flying V guitar and shreds us up a gnarly city memo. This week is no exception. Bang your head, memo health will drive you mad!

Over the winter, the Parks and Recreation Department partnered with Concord's new youth lacrosse league and is handling all the registrations for the league. The department is pleased to announce that this new partnership has been very successful, Aspell writes, as the league has 260 children participating, an increase of over 100 players from last year. Teams have begun practices and games will begin this weekend.

This past week, the grounds staff of the Parks and Recreation Department began working on all athletic fields. This year has been a challenge for staff, Aspell writes, as weather has not cooperated. They hope to open fields this week. All of the city's tennis and basketball courts are open.

Sox tix available

There are still tickets available for the Parks and Recreation Department's trip to Fenway Park on April 29, for the game versus the Seattle Mariners. Tickets are $65 for residents and $75 for non-residents, Aspell writes. The fee includes school bus transportation.

Public transit meeting

The Public Transit Subcommittee of the city's Transportation Policy Advisory Committee will hold its next meeting on April 14 from 3 to 5 p.m. at St. Paul's Church, 21 Centre St. The meeting is open to the public and anyone interested in Concord's public transit system is welcome to attend, Aspell writes.

Clippings must go

The city's spring yard waste collection program will begin on April 18 and run through May 27, Aspell writes. Concord residents who participate in the curbside trash collection program are eligible to participate.

Materials must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on the same day the regular trash is collected. Residents have two options for pickup:

1: Yard waste is placed curbside in paper yard waste bags, available at local stores (paper yard waste bags must be used if this option is chosen); or

2: Yard waste is placed curbside in 30-gallon barrels, weighing less than 50 pounds and clearly marked “Yard Waste.” No plastic bags containing yard waste will be accepted.

Acceptable materials: leaves, grass, hedge trimmings, weeds, fruit tree droppings, mulch and garden plant waste. Brush, branches and limbs must measure 3 inches or less in diameter, be cut to 3 feet or less in length and be bundled.

Unacceptable materials: sand; dirt; rocks; bricks; root balls; cement blocks or other masonry items; anything plastic or metal (including wire); painted, stained or pressure treated woods; plywood; kitty litter or animal waste.

Hope you didn't get whiplash from headbanging too hard, because Tom will be back with an encore next week. “Freebird!”
