Service opportunity

This year on Martin Luther King day, the Greater Concord Interfaith Council has planned a great event. Each faith community is asked to form service teams, which, with the help of the United Way, will be paired with service partners for a day of community service.

First Congregational Church is very excited to form a team of young people who may or may not be otherwise associated with our congregation. We are a service-oriented church and count it a privilege to connect people with opportunities for service.

The service day will take place on Jan. 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be followed by a celebration and a closing meal of soup and bread. The soup will be made by having everyone bring an ingredient. It will be a real community soup!

Applications for the 2011 Young Women in Public Affairs Award are now available from the Zonta Club of Concord through high school guidance counselors.

The goal of the Young Women in Public Affairs program is to encourage more young women to participate in public affairs by recognizing their commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women.

Applicants are asked to reflect on their voluntary commitment to their school and to their community and the problems limiting the advancement of the status of women in their own country and worldwide. The Zonta Club looks to the young women of today for the leaders of tomorrow.

Applications are due to: Carolyn Andrews, P.O. Box 1736, Concord, N.H., 03302-1736 by Feb. 4, 2011. Applicants must be pre-university or pre-college students (age 16-19).
