City briefly

Every Friday, City Manager Tom Aspell writes a riveting memo. Here are the highlights:

Tom gets all jolly on us

’Twas about a month before Christmas and all through the city, not a tree was undecorated – Concord looked so darn pretty!

“The Grounds Division has been busy setting up and decorating trees for the holiday season,” Tom wrote, feeling rather like Kris Kringle.

According to Santa Aspell, trees have been set up on Concord Heights, in Penacook, Eagle Square and near the State House arch. Banners and decorations have been placed on utility poles.

“Happy holidays to everyone!” Tom added while polishing off a plate of cookies and milk.

Seriously, watch TV/strong>

During this part of the memo, Tom got very serious . . . serious about fun, that is!
The Concord Recreation Department has a new monthly show on ConcordTV’s Channel 17 called “We are Serious About Fun.”

Titles that they threw out included “Have Fun or Face Punishment” and “Uncle Aspell’s Happy Hoedown.”

We are not serious.

This month’s show will focus on the rec department’s upcoming programs and events scheduled for the winter.

Tune in. Seriously.

Still time for b-ball

The Concord Recreation Department also wanted to let folks know that the seventh through 12th-grade basketball registrations have been extended. You know, in case kids are looking for something to do when “We are Serious About Fun” isn’t airing.

Boys and girls now have up until Dec. 3 to register. Players who sign up on or before Friday will be charged the regular fee of $44. Those who can’t manage to do things on time will be asked to pay $10 extra.

Construction talk: The Heights and Route 3

Here’s what streets to avoid this week:

Work continues on Route 3. This week, the contractor will be installing vertical granite street curbing from North State Street to Second Start school and then on to Hillcrest Avenue. Expect one-lane traffic conditions.

Also steer clear of Allard Street and portions of Branch Turnpike. Advanced Paving & Excavating will be base paving the new sidewalks on these roads.
