A Vintage Affair
Isabel Wolff
2009, 346 pages
Setting: Present-day London

Phoebe Swift should be ecstatic. She has just realized her dream and opened a vintage clothing shop in London, called Village Vintage. But although the shop is starting to be successful, Phoebe is struggling with the death of her best friend, Emma. Phoebe feels that she could have been a better friend to her. As part of her job, Phoebe meets an elderly French woman who is selling her vintage clothing. Mrs. Bell believes she betrayed a childhood friend in World War II, and Phoebe is drawn to her story.

This is not just a feel-good story about a vintage clothing shop, although there are some wonderful descriptions of the clothes and the customers. Phoebe is dealing with grief as well as family and relationship problems. But she is also compelled to find out the fate of Mrs. Bell’s lost friend. Phoebe is a warm-hearted soul and there are some interesting and likable characters in this romantic novel.
