Taco Tuesday at Dos Amigos is a favorite lunch stop for me, but the tacos aren’t the only reason to stop in at Dos. Lately I find that I look forward to what I find on their walls. Dos has long given a home to local artwork, and recently, all tacos aside, it’s been worth a visit just to see what’s hanging.
Currently defying gravity on those walls: the fine art of Catherine Jennison. I did a little digging to contact the artist. Jennison is currently a senior at Keene State College, and a first generation college student, graduating this year with a bachelor of fine arts. In her own words, she’s “currently working with landscape and abstraction.” Her monotypes are included in the collection hanging at Dos (translation: she’s a printmake. Wicked!).
Dos is definitely not the last stop in New Hampshire for her artwork – she’s currently working on a BFA student show at Keene State College in the spring. Her prints will be hanging at Dos Amigos until Nov. 30. Make a stop to check them out.
Just prior to Catherine’s showing, I found the work of MOG on the Dos walls. MOG, also known as Lane Meyer, is a fine artist whose day-job brings him to Concord on a regular basis.
MOG works primarily in oil paints on canvas with the occasional venture into block printing. Drawing in charcoal also gives him the heavy contrast and textural mess that he seeks when creating. He finds himself drawn to, as he puts it, abstract and expressive forms, and the texture and boldness of his work in these forms is what caught my attention.
Some of MOG’s works are currently available at Granite State Natural Foods. MOG’s work may also be familiar to visitors at this past summer’s Concord Arts Market. You can find out more about him at deathofanartist.net.
Another happy artistic discovery: the photography of Katie Baca. Proof that you really should check out the cards and fliers posted on public bulletin boards. I found her card on the board at Dos some time ago and brought it home and checked her out online. Ka-pow! Baca’s work has a clear voice, and that voice does not apologize. It’s no mistake: Katie is also a member of the Granite State Roller Derby Team, and anyone could guess what might happen to the fool who gets between a roller derby girl and her point of view.
Baca is also a Concord resident. Her work can be viewed at her website, katiebaca.com. Unconventional pinups, quietly disturbed daydreams, urban decay and more await.
As if $2 tacos weren’t exciting enough on their own, these discoveries are inspiring. It makes me want to run home for an afternoon drive behind my sewing machine.
