Go see the foliage from a boat!

Autumn colors look twice as nice when they’re reflected in New Hampshire’s lakes, rivers and harbors, so take some time this fall to check out a local boat tour.

Below, you’ll find a list of cruise companies that operate well into October. Before you head to the docks, though, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, be sure to call ahead. The weather is fickle this time of year, and a brisk autumn breeze may force a change in schedule.

It’s also a good idea to reserve tickets while you’re on the phone. Foliage cruises are popular among leaf peepers and can fill up fast, especially on weekends.

Listen carefully to the safety announcements at the beginning of the cruise, and be sure to dress in layers. A warm day dockside can grow chilly once you’re afloat. Bring a hat, a sweater and a windbreaker. And don’t forget sunscreen. Just because summer’s over doesn’t mean you won’t burn.

– The Isles of Shoals Steamship Company operates out of Portsmouth through late October. Enjoy daytime tours of Great Bay or, if you prefer a more rambunctious outing, check out one of their evening cruises. Special events include “Reggae on the River” on Sept. 29 and a “Kickin’ Country Cruise” on Oct. 9.

– Portsmouth Harbor Cruises’ inland river and fall foliage cruise takes passengers into either Great Bay or up the Cocheco River into Dover.
You’ll see tankers and freighters, the remains of old shipyards and, of course, autumn colors. A typical cruise lasts 2 ½ hours. The tide dictates the route.

– Lake Winnipesaukee is gorgeous this time of year, studded with colorful islands and surrounded by mountains that might boast their first dusting of snow. The M/S Mount Washington continues to crisscross Lake Winnipesaukee through late October. In addition to daytime cruises, the Mount hosts some amazing fall events including a Halloween party and Sunday brunches with menu items like Vermont cheddar penne with maple smoked bacon and apple-raisin crepes.

– Visitors to Lake Sunapee have their choice of boats. The MV Kearsarge, a replica of a Victorian-era steamboat, offers dinner cruises. Enjoy foliage and a buffet catered by the local Appleseed Restaurant. Or climb aboard the MV Mount Sunapee II for a daytime tour. Both boats operate on weekend through Columbus Day.
