Say hello to a longtime Concordian, Ron Blasdell

This month, Meet a Senior's Anita Hickey has a conversation with Ron Blasdell, who moved here from Springville, N.Y., with his family 30 years ago.

Why did you move here?

I accepted employment with a company in Bow. . . . It was not an easy decision leaving an area where you where born and raised but we felt Concord had much to offer us as a family.

What was your first impression of Concord?

Springville was a small farming community and we had none of the services that we found here in Concord. This city is well maintained and provides residents with outstanding services. I was impressed with the school system, the library, and the uniqueness of Main Street.

How did you familiarize yourself with the city?

We started going to yard sales. It helped us to learn the streets and neighborhoods of the city. The people that we met were so friendly and helpful. Sometimes we would spend time walking in different neighborhoods. It did not matter what area of the city we were walking in; the people that we would encounter along the way would always have a smile and speak to you.

What hobbies and interests do you enjoy?

Making furniture is a special craft that I enjoy. I have built deacon benches, hope chests and other items that members of my family have appreciated. My project this summer is teaching my two grandchildren how to make birdhouses for their yard. Several hours of my time are spent building model airplanes and model cars to add to my collection. Home remodeling is right at the top of my list.

I was in the Navy during the Vietnam War and my love of the ocean continues today. When we moved to Concord, I started visiting lighthouses up and down the New England coast. My favorite is Pemaquid Point Lighthouse located in Bristol, Maine. According to historical records it was built in 1826. My ancestors came from England and settled in Bristol, Maine. That makes this lighthouse special.

Do you work or are you retired?

I am employed by GP2 Technologies in Bow. This company manufacturers case making machines to do bookbinding. My position is a field service engineer. I travel to Europe and the U.S., installing and training staff on how to use this machine. . . . I have no plans to retire for a few more years.

What kind of entertainment do you enjoy in the city?

For years, we have been enjoying the fantastic performances at Eagle Square. It is so pleasant to spend an evening outside listening to great music. Our home is located in the South End of town. We are planning on attending the musical concerts . . . at Rollins Park. The new gazebo at the park is beautiful. It is the perfect setting to spend a summer night enjoying music. I would like to commend our city's recreation department for the fabulous job that they do. A job well done! Remember, as a senior it is important to keep busy, get out with people and be part a great community.
