Being fit never tasted so good

If you didn't make it to last Wednesday's “Fit Flicks Fest” at the Concord Boys and Girls Club, you missed the recipe for Chef Shelly Shecker's famous shimmy shimmy shish-kabob.

The kabobs are simple to make: slice up bananas, oranges, melons and green and red apples. Put ingredients on a skewer. Enjoy.

The message of the film festival wasn't complicated either: Swap out junk food for a healthy snack. Boys and Girls club members Marjorie Owen, Caitlin Blanchette and Amy Dussault shared this advice with their peers during “The Chef Shelly Shecker Show” – a video the girls created for the mini-film festival. A second film, produced by the club's art director, Lu Demello, documented the club's 2009 garden project.

When the flicks were over, Marjorie, Caitlin and Amy were recognized for their hard work with gift cards to Dick's Sporting Goods and certificates on behalf of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation and the Foundation for Healthy Communities.

The club itself was also given kudos for keeping kiddos healthy. During last year's gardening project, kids had fun growing and eating their own vegetables.

Members continued to nosh for nourishment when the club swapped out vending machine soda and candy for water, cheese and crackers and fruit rolls-ups.

For these efforts Beth Gustafson Wheeler, director of community health at the Foundation for Healthy Communities, presented Demello and the club's executive director Chris Emond with a certificate of appreciation, as well as a gift card to purchase physical equipment for the club.

Nice work, guys. Keep it up. And if you feel so inclined, hook us up with some shimmy shimmy shish-kabobs. You know where to find us.
