Ask the Elders: Retirement savings

Dear Elders, If you had a chance to do it differently, how would you manage your nest egg or retirement package?
Signed,
Sal

Dear Sal:
If I had to do it over again, I would do exactly the same: Ask my husband, who was very interested and knowledgeable about finance, to do all the planning. My children were overjoyed how easy his estate was to settle. Now my daughter, who studied her father’s methods, is in charge.

Dear Sal:
I could have put more aside in stocks, etc., but I would be quite bitter to have deprived myself for years and then lose it all in this crash. Especially when AIG pooh bahs are getting million dollar bonuses, with my tax money! I feel so sorry for the people who have lost their retirements and so much money.

Dear Sal:
Your question suggests that I haven’t managed my nest egg or retirement package to the best of my ability under various conditions of the market. Well, Sal, you are wrong. I was taught to save money whenever I could, get professional advice on how and where to invest it and look to the future. And although when I was young, it was not always easy to picture myself 50 years or so later, it was that nest egg that appealed to me. So now, looking back, I can say that it all worked out just fine. If only the stock market would bounce back.

Dear Gus (Gus is a nickname for a friend called Sal):
Who knew that millions of dollars would be paid out to the employees of the outrageous financial institutions? Forty years ago, I would have gotten a position with one of the now bankrupt financial institutions and gotten away with a few million in bonus money for my retirement way before the current investigations. Alas, it was not to be. So here I am, comfy on my lumpy green mattress.

Dear Sal:
In light of today’s economy, I think I would wrap it in an old sock and stuff it under my mattress. It might not grow any, but at least I would know it was still there.
