What’s going on with yard waste pickup?

We’re so glad you asked. The city will still swing by to get your yard waste in the spring and fall. In the summer, it’s anticipated that the schedule will be the same as the former bi-weekly schedule for recycling. However, due to new restrictions from the state, yard waste cannot be put in plastic bags. You’ll need to purchase a paper bag from a grocery or hardware store. Yard waste should not be put in the purple bags for trash.

In the fall, residents need only brush leaves to the curb, where they’ll be sucked up by some kind of giant leaf vacuuming contraption (that’s not the technical name for it). No need for bags.

You can also bring your yard waste directly to the drop site on Fort Eddy Road. It’s next to the Capital Area Veterinary Emergency Services, before you get to NHTI. It’s open Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

The cost to drop off a car or truck load leaf or yard waste is $5, brush $10, asphalt $5 and clean concrete, brick and block $15.

I’ve got bulky items. What do I do with them?

Bulky items should be brought to the transfer station on Old Turnpike Road, where they can be disposed of for a fee. These items include:

Mattress or box spring: $10
Couches (small): $12
Couches (large): $18
Stuffed chairs: $10
Desks: $15
Appliances with CFCs: $25
Televisions and monitors: $20
Propane tanks: $12
Fluorescents light bulbs: $0.75 each for small screw in type. (First six free for Concord residents) Long bulbs $1.

If you want to pay Best Way an extra $25, they’ll come haul some the larger items for you, like mattresses and furniture. Call 224-5454.

The transfer station is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-3 p.m. The station is closed on Tuesday and Sunday. Payment types accepted are cash, Mastercard and Visa (no checks).

Do I have to wait for weekly pickup to get rid of my recyclables?

Not if you’re willing to take a field trip to the transfer station on Old Turnpike Road. Residents can drop off recyclables during business hours for free. (See “I’ve got bulky items” for hours.)
The transfer station will additionally accept engine oil, anti freeze, thermostats, thermometers, rechargeable batteries and cell phones at no charge. Just ask to see an attendant for these items.

Residents may also recycle car batteries and up to four tires per year. Bring your car registration and a valid ID.

Did you know you can also drop off book, CDs, DVDs, videos, audio books and records/LPs? These donated materials are given to nonprofit groups through the “Got Books” program. Nice work, transfer station!
