Watch some talent being put to good use!

The South Church Talents Project presents singer-songwriter Cosy Sheridan in concert with Kent Allyn on Aug. 20 at South Congregational Church, 27 Pleasant St., at 7:30 p.m. in the community hall. Tickets are $12 at the door.

Sheridan has been called “one of the era's finest and most thoughtful singer/songwriters.” The winner of The Telluride Bluegrass Troubadour Contest and the Kerrville Folk Festival's NewFolk Songwriting Contest, she has played everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Philadelphia Folk Festival.

Her songs have appeared on the Jerry Lewis Telethon, The Dr. Demento Show, in best-selling author Robert Fulghum's new book “Third Wish” and in the upcoming environmental documentary “Wrenched. “

Kent Allyn, Sheridan's long- time musical partner, has taught bass and piano at Concord Community Music School over the past 10 years and also performs with the renowned big band, Ben Baldwin and the Big Note.

The South Church Talents Project is based on the “parable of the talents” from The New Testament. A group of church members created a fund of $3,000, which was parceled out in $10 increments, challenging each person to take his or her “talent” and multiply it.

The project began in June, and will end the first Sunday in September. Some church members have baked and sold cookies, some have made craft items to sell and others have offered their skills.

The point is for each person to consider “what do I have that is my 'talent'?” and to try to share it. South Church member Ellen Sheridan is using her talent to produce the concert.

As well as contributing to the Talent's Project, the concert will be a 20th anniversary celebration for Sheridan and Allyn who first worked together in 1989 on Sheridan's first CD “Late Bloomer.”
