Meet the softball dream team

A long time ago,
Okay, last week
.
in a galaxy far, far away,
That would be Manchester Street.

a team of champions was born.

We called ourselves “Team Insider,” or “The Destroyers” or “Team White,” depending on whom you were talking to. There were 15 of us, and we had dreams of making it big in the softball world. Dreams that met an untimely end when we played the Concord All-Stars team participating in the Babe Ruth Softball World Series. Perhaps we set our sights too high on this one.

The series, going on this week, features 10 teams from across the United States. As host city, Concord automatically gets a team in the tournament. Girls ages 14 to 16 from Concord High, Merrimack Valley and Bishop Brady form the team of super-talented players, which is under the leadership of Coach Mike Demers.

The team agreed to play a scrimmage against us before the start of the series. Our first attempt got rained out, but on a warm, sunny day last week, we finally got the showdown we were looking for. “Smack down” would be another term for what we got, but we’ll let you read Sean Peick’s play-by-play coverage (see related links).

For now, we’d like to introduce you to our dream team. It’s a hybrid team – we weren’t able to pull together enough Insider volunteers, so Mike combined our team with a National Guard team that was also going to scrimmage against the girls. Still short a few people, Mike waved his magic wand and came up with two girls from the Babe Ruth 18U league and threw in two pitchers from his own team. So yeah, we were the mutt team, but we were mutts with heart.
