Garden center guide

You may not know this after the weekend we just had (was that snow on our windshield?) but apparently it's spring. No matter how damp it is outside, we still find comfort knowing that with April showers come – yup, you guessed it – May flowers.

Some of you have already seen buds popping up, and others aren't interested in floral gardens but are more into the veggie variety. Wherever your green thumb guides you, we've got you covered in our handy guide to Concord's garden centers. We focused on the important stuff like services offered and seed variety, but also had some fun seeking out unexpected features (hello, wine at Cole Gardens!). To help determine who had the best prices, we chose a flat of one kind of flower we knew each spot would have – pansies – and compared. However, we learned that a low price tag doesn't always mean best value, as we're sure all you avid gardeners out there already know.

For the other categories – best buy, organic and local products and services – we simply quizzed a friendly employee or owner and jotted down notes. We also noted unexpected features and cool extras that didn't fit within the prior parameters.

Enjoy your gardening journey across the city, and may your begonias live long and prosper.

The local greenhouse you won’t find on the next page is Rufo’s Greenhouse, 194 Rumford St. Flowers won’t be available here until around Mothers Day. Rufo’s is also a full-service flower shop – call 224-4048 to order flowers. Once the flowers come in (all grown in New England), take advantage of some of Rufo’s garden services, including planting, garden design, window boxes, whiskey barrels and cemetery plantings.
