City vehicles saving fuel, fumes, money

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell delivers us a memo about all the comings and goings, the ins and outs and what-have-yous of our fair city of Concord. We like to imagine his face in the sky, beaming down on us like the sun. Basically like Teletubbies. So bust out your flippy floppies and suntan lotion, Tom is heating us up!

The city has focused on energy efficiency measures for several years in an effort to reduce energy consumption in its buildings and transportation sectors, Aspell writes. In December 2010, the city installed anti-idling equipment in eight fleet vehicles, including seven light duty trucks and one police cruiser. With this new technology, the city predicts to save 3,000 gallons of fuel, which is expected to produce an annual savings of close to $8,000.

New license plates for municipal cops

The Concord Police Department has placed new license plates on all of its marked police vehicles, Aspell writes. These plates clearly identify Concord Police Department vehicles as municipal police registered cars by way of these unique license plates, which were recently rolled out by the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. All Concord police marked vehicles now will bear these plates with the last number indicating the specific vehicle number in the fleet.

Culvert replacement to begin next week

The box culvert and outfall structure at Rattlesnake Brook in the vicinity of 472 N. State St. is going to be replaced shortly, Aspell writes. Construction is expected to begin during the week of Feb. 28. The project includes the demolition of buildings and debris at the site, as well as the replacement of the culvert structures and stabilization of the site. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-May, weather pending.
