Bow mysteries, solved!

We gave Eric a lot of homework over the weekend – not only did we ask for driving tour destinations, but we also sent him some questions to respond to, courtesy of our dear readers. You’ve got an “A” in our book, Eric.

Where does Bow get its name from?
Roseanne Cota

Eric’s answer: I have always been led to believe that it was originally called “Bow” because of the bend or bow in the Merrimack River as it passes through our community.

The Insiders did some research!: In the book “100 Acres More or Less,” by David Bundy (published in 1975), Bundy admits that no one really knows for sure where the name “Bow” came from. He mentioned Eric’s theory and added that it might have also been a parish in London where the town’s proprietors were from.

Why doesn’t Bow have a post office?
Donna Frost

Eric’s answer: Since it was established in 1727, Bow has had post offices on and off over the years. The last post office, operated by volunteers at the Bow Municipal Office Building began in the late 1980s and ended in the early 1990s. The postal authorities in Concord really did not favor Bow having its own post office because of its proximity to the Concord post office facilities. In addition, it became difficult to obtain the volunteers needed to provide the services. In the end, only the post office boxes remain in the Bow Municipal Office Building to service the local needs of both businesses and inpiduals.

What are residents of Bow referred to as? Bowians, Bowdians, Bowsi?
Jim Taber

Eric’s answer: I don’t know of anyone being referred to anything other than a Bow resident, or a resident of Bow or a Falcon Supporter!

From The Insiders: We’re personally partial to “Bowites” and will start using this term immediately in conversation in hopes of starting a trend.
