Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman investigates an accident scene where a truck has gone off the side of a steep hill in Posadas County, N.M. The young driver was thrown from the truck and died, but there are disturbing clues at the scene that make Estelle think the victim was helped along to his death.
In this mystery the reader gets a ride-along with Estelle as she goes through her day. Estelle looks into the crash, talks to people in her former village about a possible scam, works with a woman who is writing an article on the department and takes time to be with her family. It’s days like these that make her long for those “long bouts of peace” that they have periodically.
This is a great mystery with a strong sense of place, and Estelle is an intriguing character.
