The great thing about Halloween in Concord is the bonus trick-or-treating.

You’ve got the traditional night in the city, where princesses, superheroes and ghosts knock on stranger’s doors asking for treats.

But a few days before the big candy collection, children get a trial run along North Main Street. It’s called Halloween Howl – but we probably didn’t have to tell you that, since it’s been around way longer than the Insider.

Every Friday before Halloween, the street is shut down and businesses along North Main hand out candy to hundreds (maybe thousands) of area children, this year from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

But Halloween Howl is so much more than a warm-up trick-or-treat adventure. It is after all one of the few nights a year we can dress up as the Hulk and not get funny looks.

The annual costume parade will march down North Main starting at 6 p.m., and Nazzy, from the Morning Wake Up on 98.3, will once again have the LNH dance party rockin’.

Concord Parks & Rec will be hosting some throwback playground games near City Plaza from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Dusty Gray will serenade all comers to Bicentennial Square from 6 to 8 p.m. And there’s no cover charge.

Double Midnight Comics, as you may know, are kind of in the business of superheroes and comics, so you’ll want to see what they’re up to.

Get up-close with the Concord Police Department motorcycles and mountain bike unit, and Touch a Fire Truck.

The Concord Family YMCA will have a haunted bus and playground located at the corner of Warren and North State streets from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. It’s free to the public, but will be scary and only appropriate for school-aged children. The YMCA will also have a small area that will be less scary for very young children and those kids who are too scared to go through a traditional haunted area.

Since the street will be blocked off to traffic, North Main Street from Centre Street to Pleasant Street will be closed to vehicles from 4 to 8:30 p.m.

Parking is available and recommended at the Storrs Street Garage, State Street Garage and School Street Garage. Parking is free after 5 p.m.
