City Briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell wanders around the city’s trails in search of Concord’s version of the Bow emu. When his efforts are unsuccessful, he uses crushed up leaves to create his weekly city memo.

Getting rid of waste

The hazardous kind

Concord General Services would like to thank everyone who came out to its annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day at the Everett Arena on Sept. 27. It was a tremendous success this year, with approximately 720 households attending the event to help keep the community safe and clean by properly disposing of their household hazardous waste.

Attendance for this event has grown significantly compared to the 523 households that participated last year and 204 households in 2013. Increased attendance is proof that more residents are doing their part to help recycle these unwanted materials and prevent these hazardous wastes from polluting our community by improper disposal, Aspell writes. Or is that more people are using hazardous wastes? Guess it’s one of those chicken or the egg kind of questions.

Win a new showerhead

Sign up for WaterSense

Want to experience a luxurious shower while saving water, energy and possibly even money on utility bills? Use less water without sacrificing the experience of full water coverage and pressure. Consider upgrading your showerhead to a high performance WaterSense labeled showerhead in celebration of October being WaterSense’s “Shower Better Month” – or better yet, enter for a chance to win one by entering the Concord General Services’ E-Z Pay for WaterSense contest.

To enter the contest, simply enroll in the city’s automatic utility billing payment plan. E-Z Pay automatically deducts your water bill payment from your authorized bank account, so you never have to worry about a late payment. Consumers enrolled in E-Z Pay still receive a bill summary, which includes the date that the authorized bank account will be drafted, making it easy to track payments. Residents may enroll in E-Z Pay in person at the utility billing office at 311 N. State St., or complete the online enrollment form at concordnh.gov/utilitybilling. All new and existing E-Z Pay enrollees, as of 5 p.m. on Oct. 23, will be entered for a chance to win one of five WaterSense labeled showerheads, Aspell writes. If it’s really that luxurious, you should probably sign up. Like right now.

An estimated 30 gallons of water is used each day for showering in the average household. Just replacing an outdated showerhead with a WaterSense model could save the average family up to 2,900 gallons of water each year.

Shower better this October with WaterSense by entering the E-Z Pay for WaterSense contest. Full official contest rules are available at the utility billing office and online at concordnh.gov/watersense.

Learnin’ new stuff

Stay safe in case of a fire

This week is National Fire Prevention Week and this year’s theme is “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep.”

Every bedroom needs to have a working smoke alarm. Fire Department crews will be visiting the city’s elementary schools to deliver fire safety messages and some items for having fun and learning about safety, Aspell writes. Those items will not include lighters or matches, but maybe there will be a cool plastic firefighters’ helmet involved.

For more information, visit the National Fire Protection Association website at nfpa.org or visit the Concord Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Main Street update

More construction news

With another week of work completed, the Main Street project has reached another milestone.

The first trees have been planted on the west side of the street, with more to come, Aspell writes. And no, you can’t cut one down for Christmas this year.

Throughout this week, Salmon Falls Nursery will continue working on planters from Centre Street to Capital Plaza; crews will continue to lay granite pavers in City Plaza; and sidewalks heading south from Capital Plaza will be fine graded and prepped for street spanning banners.
