We know, there’s a day designated for just about everything.
In April alone, there’s days to celebrate no housework, jelly beans (sign us up), talk like Shakespeare and hug an Australian.
Most of them are a little zany and overlooked by most of the country’s population – and for good reason – but one you should definitely take part in is National Walking Day.
That’s correct, the first Wednesday in April is a day designated to get you out and moving. Sure, we should all probably be out there every day logging a few miles, but let’s face it, we don’t always have time for that kind of extended physical activity.
We know it’s short notice, but we’re pretty sure you can find time to walk further than from your car to place of employment. It doesn’t have to be across the city or for any certain amount of time or distance, just get out there and get moving.
It might be a little early in the day, but the Concord Library is hosting a Walking Day 5k at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Email moonjoggers@gmail.com for all the info.
And as a way to entice you, we thought it might be good to highlight a few spots in the city to make the most of what will surely be an actual national holiday one of these years.
Plus, who wouldn’t want a reminder of all the great places to walk in Concord?
Concord’s Historic Walking Tour
As you probably know, Concord is rich in history. It makes sense, considering we’ve been around for more than 250 years.
So if you’re feeling a little frisky and are in the mood for some learning, might we suggest the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce’s “A Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Concord.”
The tour gives you more than 60 sights to check out, while logging about two miles worth of walking.
Trails system
As you’ve read in the Insider before, Concord is home to many great trails. There are more than 30 on the city website that vary in both difficulty and distance.
No matter what area of the city you are in, there’s most certainly a path in the woods that will help you forget about all of those things that bog you down day after day. Just remember, this is the time of year when mud and snow combine to make things tricky, so just dress your feet accordingly.

Other options
Since it is still cold at times, and the weather in April can be a little dreary and unpredictable, Steeplegate Mall has lots of open space to log some steps in a nice controlled environment. You can even stop in and buy something at one of the shops if you need a break.
If you don’t feel like taking part in the whole historic walking tour, you certainly can just walk around Main Street. It’s pretty nice after that impressive facelift over the last two years.
By Googling Concord NH walking, we found this nifty website, mapmywalk.com/ us/concord-nh, which has all kinds of routes of varying distances created by real people.
And if you can’t get out for a walk on Wednesday – or if you didn’t pick up this Insider before then – the great thing about walking is that you can do it at any time. Just remember, all you have to do is put one foot in front of the other.
