Reptiles, farmers markets and movies always go hand in hand

There are also some gatherings to attend

Wednesday

One of life’s great challenges is trying to figure out how to spend your time between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. It’s that awkward period where we’re all basically just staring at the clock waiting for the new year to arrive.

But this year, you can do something a bit scaly at the Concord Public Library to keep you busy.

If you want to learn all about reptiles – and maybe even meet some up close and personal – check out Reptiles on the Move at the library from 2 to 4 p.m.

The event will take place in the auditorium, which is down a level from the ground floor.

It’s free to get in, but since seating is limited, tickets are required.

For more information, call 225-8670 (option 4).

Thursday

So we put a big list of all kinds of New Year’s Eve happenings on the next page, but that list is not exhaustive. Some of the things we left off that list include:

∎ Holiday Inn’s New Year’s Eve Gala: There will be a cocktail hour, dinner, two comedians and dancing. Dinner is at 7 p.m. with the comedy starting at 8:30. Dancing will start at 10. There will be a champagne toast at midnight and more dancing until 1 a.m. Tickets are $79 or $249 with a hotel room. For more info, call 224-9534 or go to NewYearsEveEvents.com.

∎ Peace Gathering: This isn’t about politics, religion, war or protest. It’s about sharing a moment of togetherness, a moment to express gratitude for whatever we’re grateful for, a moment to pay respects. It all goes down on the State House lawn at 7 p.m. It will be dark by then, so bring candles.

Friday

It’s New Year’s Day, and as such, most of the world is recovering from the night before. Use this day to get started on those New Year’s resolutions – or just pound a few double cheeseburgers on the couch while watching TV and browsing Facebook on your phone. Whatever works for you.

Saturday

If you took our advice about the burgers on New Year’s Day, you might end up feeling guilty about it the next day. Luckily, you don’t have to waste away in a vat of self-loathing for all of eternity. Instead, you can just make up for it by going to the Winter Farmers Market at Cole Gardens from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 30 vendors will be there selling things that are guaranteed to be better for you than those double burgers we told you to devour. All you have to do is eat a few carrots and it’s like you never even ate the burgers.

Sunday

The Sunday after New Year’s Eve should be a day for just sitting back and relaxing. All the serious partying should be out of the way by now, and with the work week looming a day away, what better way to cap off the weekend then with a movie?

Head over to Red River Theatres at 4 p.m. to catch Here Comes Mr. Jordan.

The 1941 film about a boxer who is accidentally sent to heaven before his time is an unrated, black-and-white fantasy film.

It’s an oldie, but a goodie. Not that we’ve ever seen it or anything, but Rotten Tomatoes has it listed at a perfect 100 percent on the “Tomatometer,” so it must be pretty legit.
