City briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell sits patiently at his desk with his hand raised, just waiting to be called upon. When he's finally given the floor, he proceeds to filibuster us with that week's city memo. We wrote it all down, and here it is.

Thanks, Tom!

More yard work. yay?

Leaf pickup to begin

The General Services Department will begin the annual residential leaf pick-up program the week of Oct. 29, Aspell writes.

The program will run until approximately Dec. 7, depending on weather. Leaves should be placed unbagged at the curbside and the crews will pick them up. They are easier to spot and more likely to get a ride if they hold their thumbs out.

The city will have three crews: one starting at the Bow town line on South Street and working north; one starting at Blossom Hill Cemetery and working north up North State Street into Penacook; and one starting on Mountain Road and working south on the east side of the Merrimack River. If crew one leaves at 9 a.m. and crew two leaves at 11 a.m., what time will you stop reading this sentence?

Only leaves will be picked up. Any unacceptable material which has been illegally deposited in the public right-of-way must be removed by the abutting landowner. Examples of unacceptable material include branches, brush, concrete, metal goods and construction demolition debris. And your neighbor's lawnmower.

Have you heard?

There's road work!

The final overlay of Phases II and III of the Route 3 corridor improvements, from Hutchins Street to Abbottville Road, has been completed, Aspell writes. Striping and pavement markings are soon to follow, as weather allows.

The rain has been delaying base pavement in the section of North State Street from Call Street to Rumford Street – and has also been making us sleepy at work. Please stay tuned to the on-site message boards for the revised schedule. Once the base pavement is placed, subcontractors will begin installation of granite curbing and raising utility castings in this area.

This week, the pipe crew will move south to the last section of the Phase IV reconstruction, from Rumford Street to Penacook Street. Last, like, final? As in almost done?

Replacement of existing storm sewer infrastructure will begin at the central fire station and proceed north to Granite Avenue. During construction in this area, all southbound traffic will be detoured to Rumford Street, then to Penacook Street, and back to North State Street. All northbound traffic will continue north through the work zone. Northly. Going norther. This persion should help mitigate the long delays experienced during the previous phases of the work.

moving on up

Pack yo' bags

In August, the city entered into a lease for 6,145-square feet of office space for the Human Services Department and the City Prosecutor's Office at Horseshoe Pond Place (a.k.a. the former Page Belting Mill) located at 28 Commercial St., Aspell writes.

Renovation of the space has been underway since August and is nearly complete. The Departments will move in to their new space the week of Oct. 22. Both departments are using a variety of tools to notify their clients and the public about the move, including chainsaws, sickles and scythes.
