City Briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell throws on a pair of overalls and a striped cap, dusts off the old Lionel train set and hops on board for a tiny train tour of Concord. As he passes the Insider offices, he toots his train whistle in Morse code, spelling out the week's city memo.

Everett welcomes ice

summer freeze

The ice is back at the Everett Arena, a sure sign that summer is near its end, Aspell writes. The ice was seen returning in a Volkswagen bus and was sporting a sleeveless T-shirt and bronze tan, a sure sign that summer was, like, totally rad. Public skating is available Monday through Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on Sundays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Come and rent some new skates from the new TSR Pro Shop located at the arena.

Rehab completed

The Parks and Recreation Department and Praxair/TAFA finished renovating the Minot Enclosure fence located at the Old North Cemetery on North State Street on Sept. 13, Aspell writes.

Karon Puffer, manager of Praxair/TAFAE in Concord, met with the Parks and Recreation Department staff in the spring to discuss possible volunteer projects involving both staffs. After rejecting a proposal for a hyperbaric city manager chamber and a deluxe Insider office inside the Capitol dome, a complete restoration of the Minot Enclosure fence, which encompasses the area where President Franklin Pierce is buried, was decided upon.

To date, Praxair/TAFA's donation of time and materials to the City exceeds $80,000.

Firemen climb stairs

Four off-duty members of the Concord Fire Department participated in the second annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Brady Sullivan Tower in Manchester last Sunday, Aspell writes. Bureau Chief Aaron McIntire and firefighters Christian Lund and Roman Bastek completed a climb equivalent to 110 stories wearing approximately 75 pounds of equipment, or a climb of approximately 109 more stories than the Insider staff climbed that same day (though we did consume 75 pounds of snacks. What? Football was on.)

Firefighter Chris Johnson served on the support team. The climb memorializes the 343 members of the New York City Fire Department who were killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks. The participants raised a total of $14,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
