City Briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell writes 300 different city memos, each more informative than the last. Then he makes them into paper airplanes. Whichever one flys farthest wins!

Heat safety tips

With the hottest days of the summer approaching, the city of Concord reminds everyone never to leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles, even for a minute, Aspell writes. On an 85-degree day, the temperature inside a car – even with the windows rolled down two inches – can reach over 100 degrees within 10 minutes and continue to climb to over 130 degrees. On a bright, sunny day, even when it's as low as 60 degrees outside, temperatures can reach life-threatening levels inside a vehicle. To report a child or pet emergency inside a vehicle, call 911. Also, on hot and humid days, residents are reminded that they can take advantage of the air conditioned libraries and any of Concord's seven public swimming pools.

New public scanner

Did you know that the Concord Public Library now offers a self-service flatbed scanner for the public? The scanner can accommodate documents, photos, and negatives up to 12-by-14 inches, Aspell writes. The quick scan option is very easy to use and the image can be saved to a flash drive or emailed. Three other modes allow a patron to save to a variety of formats, though floppy disk isn't one of them. Please ask at the service desk if you would like to use this service.

Camp space available

This week marks the middle of summer and the fifth week of the Recreation Department's camps, Aspell writes. Space is still available in several summer camps, including soccer, tennis and TV/video camp.

Not offered this year: Tom Aspell city manager camp or alligator wrestling camp.

Contact the Recreation Department at 225-8690 for more information.
