“Made by Hand: Searching for Meaning in a Throwaway World”
Mark Frauenfelder
2010, 241 pages
Nonfiction
Mark Frauenfelder believes that doing something yourself helps you feel more connected to your world and to your family and helps you take control of your life. In this book, the editor of Make magazine takes the reader on an interesting tour of the DIY world, talking with people who hack their espresso machine to get the perfect cup of espresso, visiting a beekeeper to discover how to establish a thriving bee colony, and exploring online how to create a homemade guitar from a cigar box. The author also humorously describes how he ‘killed” his lawn to prepare it for gardening, how he scavenged for wood to build his own chicken coop, and what he did with a large branch of a pear tree that fell in his yard.
This is a quick, funny and informative read. If you are interested in learning about the DIY community, this book is a great introduction.
