Getting down with Diwali

Fifth-grade correspondents Ella Fabozzi and Sophia Johnson recently went to the UNH School of Law to celebrate their new favorite holiday, Diwali!

Diwali is a special Indian festival of lights to ward off evil spirits. They met with the South Asian Law Students Association students to learn more about Diwali.

Here are eight fun facts the girls want to you know about Diwali!

– The word Diwali means “row of lights.”

– Oil lamps are decorated and stay lit for five days.

– Everyone dresses up in their new clothes.

– Brothers and sisters celebrate each other and brothers give their sisters money.

– Diwali is celebrated for five days in the fall, according to the Hindu lunar
calendar.

– Diwali is celebrated at home so that the house and family are blessed.

– The food served at Diwali is mostly desserts and vegetables. No meat is served to respect the animals.

– The front entranceway floor of the home is decorated with colored powders. This is called Rangoli.
