Snobby briefly

Want to know the ins and outs of the SNOB film fest? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Opening night gala

SNOB kicks off its three-day fest of movies, movies and more movies with beer, beer and more beer.

On Friday from 4 to 6:30 p.m., an opening gala will be held at Red River Theatres. Representatives from Martha’s Exchange Brewery, Smuttynose Brewing Company, White Birch Brewing, Woodstock Inn Station & Brewery and Woodchuck Cidery will be there to pour samples of their best brews.

In between sips there will be plenty of food to munch on. The Barley House, Cheers Grille and Bar, Hermanos Cocina Mexicana, Nonni’s Italian Eatery, Dos Amigos Burritos and Constantly Pizza will all be there to dole out samples.

After stuffing your face, stick around for the film “Beer Wars.” “This somewhat controversial film takes a hard look at the beer industry from the craft viewer’s point of view, highlighting some of the obstacles they face in a market dominated by big brewers,” SNOB’s writer/editor Matt Fixler wrote in a press release.

Following “Beer Wars” six local brewers will share their own experiences with “beer wars” in New England and take questions from the audience.

Only people who purchase the VIP weekend pass ($50) can attend the gala. Non-VIP beer enthusiasts can still catch “Beer Wars” and the other Friday night movies.

Support your future Spielbergs

New to SNOB is KNOB – the Kids North of Boston film sessions. KNOB gives children in grades K-8 a chance to show off their filmmaking chops.

SNOB allowed kids to submit just about anything, but suggested the environment, social issues and New England history as a few topics they could work with.

KNOB Kids Blocks will be held on Saturday morning from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Be sure to check the schedule for exact times.

Does this burrito taste snobby to you?

In between movies you’re going to need to some nourishment. If you’re craving something meaty, stop by the Barley House. During the festival, the restaurant will be serving the SNOB Burger, topped with a fried egg, house-cured bacon and hollandaise sauce on an English muffin.

Doesn’t “snob burger” sound like something you may overhear in a high school hallway? For example, “Jennifer made fun of my Justin Bieber T-shirt. She is such a snob burger.”

If Mexican is more up your alley, Dos Amigos Burritos will have the SNOBurrito (a bean burrito with stir-fried summer squash, zucchini, red peppers and onions). The special burrito is available now and may linger on the menu after the festival ends.

If you purchase the VIP weekend pass you’re entitled to a free coffee and bagel with cream cheese at Bagel Works. It’s only available on Saturday morning. The early bird gets the bagel.

Learn how to shoot like a filmmaker

Sure, you enjoy watching all these independent flicks but do you find yourself wondering what goes on behind the lens? The Boston DSLR Users Group will be holding a workshop on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Red River Theatres.

For those of you who don’t speak tech, a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) is a type of camera. Workshop leader Daniel Berube will host screenings of films made using the cameras and discuss techniques.

Tickets are available through Red River Theatres for $5. This event will also be open to VIP weekend pass holders or day pass holders at no additional charge.

Enjoy getting the silent treatment

Thanks to New Hampshire-based musician and composer Jeff Rapsis, a certain silent flick just got less silent.

On Saturday at 7:15 p.m., see the silent movie “Paths to Paradise.” Rapsis will perform live music to accompany the movie.

The 1925-film stars comedian Raymond Griffith. Griffith has some Granite State ties – he attended St. Anselm Preparatory School in Goffstown in 1905 before heading off to Hollywood.

“Though he’s not as well known today as Charlie Chaplin, Raymond Griffith was doing some really good work during the peak of his career,” Rapsis said. “It’s great that film-goers will get a chance to appreciate Griffith’s work as part of this year’s SNOB festival.”

Admission is by weekend pass or day pass to the festival.
