Wanted: Tax-aide counselors

Do you do crossword puzzles to maintain a nimble mind? Do you belong to organizations to exercise your social skills? Do you use some of your free time to help friends and neighbors?
You can achieve all those goals and more as an AARP tax-aide counselor. We’ll train you to become an IRS-certified tax-aide volunteer and to experience the satisfaction of providing our free tax preparation service to low and middle income taxpayers.

Reunite 1980-style

Concord High School’s Class of 1980 will be celebrating its 30th reunion on Oct. 23 at the Holiday Inn, 172 N. Main St.

Beginning at 6 p.m., the night will include hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, music and dancing. The cost is $40. Prior to Oct. 15, send your payment and the names of attendees to Scott Reid, 61 Flanders Road, Warner, NH 03278.

Discounted rooms for $99 will be available at the Holiday Inn by calling 224-9534. Mention the Concord High School Class of 1980.

There will also be a family field day at Memorial Field beginning at 10 a.m. Concord High’s homecoming football game will begin at 1 p.m. There will be a section reserved for our class.

Kudos to Doris Ballard

The ConcordTV board of directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Doris Ballard to the position of executive director.

Ballard has more than 25 years of management experience in both the private and nonprofit sectors, and 10 years experience in public access television, most recently as ConcordTV’s community facilitator. She serves on the board of the Alliance for Community Media-Northeast Region and the New Hampshire Coalition for Community Media.

Ballard has a bachelor of science in management from Franklin Pierce College, and a Masters in organizational leadership from Southern New Hampshire University.

Zumba with Scouts

A zumba fundraiser will be held on Oct. 16 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Bow Community Center, Bow. This Latin-inspired dance-exercise fundraiser is hosted by Girl Scout Troop 22571. Proceeds will be used to fund Girl Scout badges, activities, trips and community service.

The cost is $15 ahead of time or $18 at the door. Doors open at 9:15 a.m., so come early to check in. For more information, call Michele Vecchione at 774-6160.

Help keep peeps warm

The Concord cold weather shelter needs evening and overnight (sleeping) volunteers. Volunteers are responsible for intake and hosting.

The cold weather shelter exists to give people a warm, secure space to sleep during New Hampshire’s harsh winter. It operates in two sites: First Church, 177 N. Main St., and South Church, 27 Pleasant St.

For new volunteers, there is an information night on Oct. 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at First Church. Training for new and former volunteers is held on Nov. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at South Church. or Nov. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at First Church. To reserve your spot, e-mail concordshelter@gmail.com.

PHS from ‘31 to ‘54

On Oct. 13, the Penacook Historical Society will present “The Way We Were: PHS Yearbooks from 1931 to 1954.” The program will be held at the Rolfe Homestead, 16 Penacook St. A potluck dinner will begin at 6 p.m., the presentation will be held at 7 p.m. All are welcome.

Dinner for locavores

Join executive chef Trish Taylor and the culinary class of the Concord Regional Technology Center as they showcase our local growers and prepare an abundance of fresh sustainable foods at the Concord Area Growers Harvest Celebration on Oct. 18.

Local producers will be at the event to present their work and to talk with attendees about the importance of local agriculture to our economy, environment, and reducing our community’s carbon footprint.

The dinner speaker will be Jay Phinizy, executive director of New Hampshire’s USDA Farm Service Agency. Music will be provided by Pressure’s On, a bluegrass band led by Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki.

The event will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott, 70 Constitution Ave. A cocktail hour and cheese tasting will begin at 5:30 p.m, the chef’s culinary stations at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20, $12 for children younger than 12. To purchase a ticket, call the Courtyard by Marriott at 225-0303

Concord High School’s varsity soccer senior night will be held at Southern New Hampshire University, 2500 N. River Road, Manchester, on Oct. 20. The varsity girls will play Merrimack at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity boys will play Timberlane at 7 p.m.

The Merrimack County Stamp Collectors’ regular monthly meeting will be held at Bow Mills United Methodist Church, 505 South St., Bow, on Oct. 19 at 1:30 p.m. All people interested in stamp collecting are invited to attend.
